In the attached image I have a screenshot of all but two wayspots in the local area with lines under to display what type of spot each is. Red is gym, Blue is pokestop, Purple is power spot.
Me and a few other local players have been trying for a few months to make submissions to get more gyms in the area, which is difficult because there aren’t many interesting locations around that get past automatic rejection but that’s beside the point. Are these locations always guaranteed to remain as the type of spot assigned to them upon being accepted? Or could there be a chance that for example one of those power spots becomes a gym instead over time? Power spots are great and all but we’ve got 3 teams fighting over 2 gyms(I know there’s a third top left but it’s in a dark and scary bush track that none of us want to go to unless necessary), plus pushy spoofers
This community will be very happy to help with trying to find suitable places to nominate and to help you make good nominations likely to succeed. So I will move this to Nomination Support
Before that happens there is quite a lot for you to understand about how wayspots - the points of interest that you are submitting - once accepted appear on the gameboard in Pokémon go. It is important as otherwise you might have a frustrating experience.
All of this information comes from community observations as Niantic does not discuss this.
There is quite a technical article about the underpinning way the game selects what can be included https://pokemongohub.net/post/article/comprehensive-guide-s2-cells-pokemon-go/
This is what your area looks like with those cells ( boxes)
The first one shows the bigger cells ( level 14) this is the size involved in determining gyms. The numbers refer to what is needed to create a gym.
The second screenshot is a zoomed in view of the area showing the smaller level 17 cells. These determine if a wayspot will appear either as a stop or gym and are part of the process of deciding powerspots.
I will stop there for now as there is a lot to absorb. But do ask questions.
Powerspots happen when a waypoint is in the same cell as a pokestop and at least 22m away from any pokestop or gym. New waypoints become powerspot eligible around the 4th of every month. Only 2 spots in each smaller area will be a powerspot at any given time so if there are more that could become powerspots then the game will rotate through them. That will make it look like they change since different ones will get chosen each time.
Many powerspots actually did not go through the nomination process, but are the result of a mass database import of business addresses. These aren’t eligible to be anything else, although the business (or something at the location) could be nominated.
