Churches that act Nurseries

Can someone explain why so many churches that act as nurseries are accepted but say the nurseries noticeboard attached to the church isn’t?

It’s hugely common in the UK that churches act as nurseries.! How did they get accepted if the church met the criteria but the nursery didn’t?

Welcome to the forums

Churches are not primarily or significantly aimed at under 18s. They happen to host nurseries as well as other things.

A noticeboard for the nursery is for something that is specifically aimed at under 18s.

Hello and Welcome @Aniimalistic
Churches are normally considered excellent candidates and in the U.K. it is often related to the building as many are at least Victorian or older.
The “church hall” ( similar to the village hall) especially in smaller communities often rents spaces for toddler groups often with a parent present. Or sometimes after school clubs. The hall is also more widely used by other communitity groups. As the nursery/ parent and toddler groups are normally Not the dominant activity most are ok. I have used the hall booking timetable to demonstrate this.
I don’t recall having seen a church hall being rented on a full time basis for a nursery. I have seen churches that have been closed and sold being bought by nurseries ro run a business. In this later case it would be considered under 18 and a rejection reason. I am seeing more closed pubs finding new life converted to nurseries.

To echo what’s already been said, churches hosting a nursery would do it for part of their hours, and the rest of the time they’d be for everyone to use. The noticeboard for a nursery wouldn’t really be a good PoI, but one for the church that also has nursery information on should be okay ie a mix of topics.

This happened to a run-down estate pub near me. The pub closed, got removed from Pokemon Go (which was in itself unusual, since not much gets reported around here), and a few months later a nursery opened up. Definitely not eligible and (presumably) no-one has attempted to submit it as “old pub”.

I managed to get a church hall accepted a few years ago despite the main noticeboard prominently displaying the details of the nursery, because it /was/ a church hall and had other activities. I was half expecting an under-18s rejection.

Thanks for the warm welcomes and swift responses. That has helped a lot and much appreciated!

So, my nephew attended my local church say for 3 days a week half days (about 4 hours a day). The nursery has its own name and operates as a nursery, however, the church does in fact hold events and mass. I believe as you mentioned the nursery rents/uses a part of the building. I still find it all a tad confusing…

Based on the rejection criteria and I quote
“Location is a private residential property (even if historical), farmland, a K12 and under school (preschool, primary/elementary, secondary/high school), child care/daycare center, rehabilitation center, safety shelter”

It doesn’t mention churches. It’s a
Noticeboard located on a church and not an actual school property/ground. My nomination was attached to the church, street access, and public accessible.! Also, I don’t see anything mention of under 18s if someone can share the link where it states this please? I’m sure a lot of children play with their parents.

I have appealed the decisions as I still believe it meets the criteria like most other notice boards.

I had a time capsule plaque for a school accepted as it wasn’t on the side of the school building and met all the criteria.

I might need to check the noticeboard again to check for any details or for a separate one . Someone mentioned it could be both which is a good thought.

I’m not sure if I missed anything but not sure how to read chat whilst writing on mobile.

Honestly, thanks for taking the time to respond and greatly appreciate everyone help/guidance.

Thank you

The generally understood definition is that anything that is primarily or significantly aimed at under-18s is not eligible.

Universities and post-school colleges can have under 18s if they have skipped a year, but this obviously should not prevent them being eligible.

Scouts/Girl guides are targeted at under-18s so not eligible even though there are adults present.

The time capsule would have been eligible if it was not on school property - being placed there by the school puts it in the same category as murals painted by children (not on school property). It’s not who created the POI that matters, but the location of it.

Your noticeboard might be eligible, depending on where it is. It might be that it didn’t seem to be anything distinct and rejecting for K12 (under 18s) was the easy option.

Also, something having pedestrian accessibility is a requirement, but does not make something eligible. It’s simply that not having on-foot accessibility makes something not eligible. This doesn’t have to be accessible for everyone.

There is often a distinct entrance used for these under 18 activities as they want to be able to check on coming and going. Not always easy one of my local church hall is used for an after school club and on election days it is a polling station with a line of chairs and staff member acting as the deterrent for the children escaping.
I do think these situations are clear cases for weighing up the individual circumstances.
I am guessing that the hope is that the notice board might make a distinct Wayspot and pokestop?
What else is at the church is it old or new?
Old ones often have foundation stones that are normally acceptable. Is there a Lytch gate they can be distinct. Any war memorials? I submitted a wooden plaque that had been brought from a now demolished church. Stained glass windows can qualify as art and also be acceptable.
Avoid any places set up to be a place of peace, solitude and reflection.

Even that is too prescriptive! I successfully submitted “St Peter and St Oswald Quiet Garden”, as it has a large plaque facing the road (and is between the road and the church, with no hedge or vegetation blocking it). I think it depends on the circumstances, but with such places tending to be ineligible.

Yes as always there can be exceptions.
Always the grey in wayfarer :slightly_smiling_face:

As for Church Noticeboards unless they are something that merits a nominations itself I always take these as a anchor for the church so would Reject as Duplicate if the church already had a waypoint.

There are exceptions if the noticeboard also displays notices for the village etc and not just the church.

A board that gives the church name, vicars name, times of service and contact details is no different to a board outside a cafe that displays opening times, specials etc. The cafe may be eligible but the board isn’t.
