Hey, I was just curious about this.
Back in end 2023 I created a Nomination for a Cemetery (it had commonwealth war graves but I did not state it in the description or the supporting info) and it was rejected for “Sensitive Location”
To today, I was nominating Nominations when I seen a nearby POI that was named “Commonwealth War Graves” with the sign that is incredibly similar to the one I nominated previously.
If I show and state that my local cemetery has Commonwealth War Graves, could it be accepted as a nomination?
Thanks, enjoy your day.
I’m going to be contrary here - these are generic plastic signs that indicate that some of the graves are under the management of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the graves are often in their own part of the cemetery and form part of a memorial.
So, generally speaking, if the wayspot I use shows the sign, it could be accepted?
It is the exact same sign used as the one shown in the image in my first post.
A friend of mine once tried submitting the Commonwealth War Graves in his local area. They got rejected both by regular reviewers and by the appeal reviewers, despite him trying to argue that they would meet the explore criteria because the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) actively encourages people to explore such sites (see here as a reference to this).
So even though I personally think a valid case could be made for them, you’d have a difficult time getting others (including Niantic) to see eye to eye with that view point.

Agreed, the whole point of these graves is to have someone visit them and pause a while to reflect on the sacrifice. Apart from dedicated cemeteries which are managed by the CWGC, they manage the parts of other graveyards that may only have a few war graves. Sometimes you can see that someone has mowed the grass and tidied up those graves, even if the others haven’t been.
But of course they can also be in sensitive areas, so if they are in the middle of a still-in-use graveyard then they bight be a reject. But conversely I’ve never had a problem with having an actual war memorial in a graveyard accepted…
I considered a CWG at a rural church.
As always they are very thought provoking to visit and and reflect. Most of the graveyard is old, pre 1900. CWG was set in a plot at the back of the original graveyard.
However relatively recently they did decide to expand the graveyard and the CWG is now next to the active site. So I have not nominated as that would be insensitive.
Practically speaking, as it is rural there would be little difference between me turning up looking at the graves as a visitor and me turning up looking at the graves and spinning a stop, but it just doesn’t seem respectful.
Not everywhere needs to be on the map.

I don’t think the problem is a single visitor so much, but when a group of players suddenly turn up. I know EX Raids in PoGo don’t seem to be a thing any more, but that certainly can become a problem.
In my example it was such a rural place it was unlikely.
But yes in particular a gym seems inappropriate.
I sometimes wish there was a way for local players to add to pokestop information to say “not a good candidate for a gym” because there are quite a number of places that can meet critiera but would be an awful location for a gym/power spot ie not good for large groups either due to being a bit of a public nuisance or due to space etc
I wonder if that was the intended use for the socialising criteria additional question about number of people but it’s not really enough
