Dilemma on Wayspot Wrong location

I have recently been active with Wayspot submissions and reviews. There is a Wayspot near my home that I visited today to upload a recent picture. While doing so, I noticed that another Wayspot, which is actually about 500 meters away from this location(in-game), was incorrectly placed instead of being at the current spot.

That Wayspot has been there for around three years, if I recall correctly from the last time I played games featuring it. The dilemma, however, is that I’ve noticed frequent gatherings around the wrongly located Wayspot, where the community has put in a lot of effort and, through valid nominations, has created a small hotspot of around six Waypoints in that area. It’s worth noting that Wayspots are otherwise sparse in this location.

I was considering editing the location of the Wayspot, but doing so would remove it from the games, as it is currently placed near another Wayspot.

I don’t want to undermine the work done by the local community, but I also don’t want to mislead new players into going to the wrong location.

Just looking for opinions from the community on how best to address this situation.

Wayspots should always be located accurately.

  • Have you checked whether there is a 2nd wayspot in the cell that could replace the incorrectly placed wayspot?

  • If not is there a potential replacement you could nominate that would replace the misplaced.

In the end this is your decision, are you wanting an accurate map or are you happy that an inaccurate map gives you 1 more waypoint?

I had this dilemma a few weeks ago, in the local shopping mall near my house, we had 3 gyms, very close to each other, one was located just outside the mall at a private residence, and has been there as long as I play the game (2016).
As it should not have been a wayspot, I reported in the game (for invalid location).

The result, when I last visited the location all three gyms are gone (2 are now pokestops), and new gyms appeared (just outside the mall)

Now I don’t know if this was the direct result of reporting it, but yes it clearly can have an impact.

Agreed. I think I’ll go ahead and report the Wayspot once I have time, as its removal won’t significantly impact the area. There are other valid POIs nearby that can be nominated as replacements.

The Company desires accurate pinning for Wayspots, and if we wish to add to their database we must strive for accuracy as well.

Still, none of us has taken an oath that we will expend all necessary effort to detect and correct every discrepancy possible for all game boards worldwide. If I interact with a hundred Wayspots, I am under no obligation to scrutinize their every aspect, nor to submit edits for them.

Location edits seem particularly problematic. I would caution anyone who asked to think very carefully before suggesting a move, if they care about being banned for abusive editing or are concerned about the impact upon any of the game-boards or mechanisms like routes, gold gym status, etc. for their own purposes or those of the community.

Considering that we don’t know when, where, why or how these things got mis-pinned in the past, we don’t owe any particular effort to fix them, beyond our own conscience, feelings or aesthetics.

No one is obligated to do any part of Wayfarer. But if someone comes here looking for clarity on what to do, it’s often best to go back to the basics of “locate things accurately.”" I personally couldn’t care less about correcting imported POI. I don’t have the spoons to care about error checking data that they paid for (unless it is a wildly inappropriate location, like a strip club). But my commitment to the user generated process called Wayfarer drives me to responsibly manage the game board.
