The water powered mills of the past were a great showcase for renewable power. Often all that remains are the weirs, the buildings gone and nature has reclaimed the area.
Yes, I did indeed. No idea why they thought it was misplaced, its next to the wier which is very obvious on satellite can’t remember what the other reasons were. This is not the only amazing mural I’ve had to appeal
Some people probably think these are generic, but I like them as interactive information boards meant to keep visitors and locals aware of daily risks to nature. I especially like that this one is on native land in Cherokee, NC.
Hmm, I should have done a better job explaining this one in the description. This is an art studio built on top of a landfill. They use the methane that builds up in the covered/topped landfill to fuel the furnaces used in glass-blowing and metal-working. When they started they thought they would only have enough gas for about 20 years. Since they are about to reach that milestone, they had another assessment done and the new estimate is that they probably have another 20 years worth of methane left to burn off. I nominated the mural before the director told me all that and I guess I forgot to go back to edit my description.
This one is a very unique mural. There are case of monkey develop habit of smoking because its imitating people and people kept throwing it cigarettes.
“This pine tree (Araucaria angustifolia) is the living frame of the Brazilian Forestry Congress held in October 20th to 26th, 1968, and it was planted by the Minister of Agriculture Ivo Arzua Pereira.” The said tree is on the right of the plaque.
The large and centenary walnut tree (Carya illinoensis - the tree behind the plaque) mentioned on the sign is one of the 51 trees in Curitiba (my city) to have been declared immune from cutting by decree 1181 of 2009 by the City Hall of Curitiba, which considers the protection of some trees of special interest, either because of their location, size, rarity, beauty or historical/cultural importance.
I’m also a little late (I think a lot of us were dealing with challenge ending on Earth Day), but I had 2 community gardens accepted this year. Here’s one of them:
Sadly I cant submit my own roof I got panels fitted a couple of years ago.
I wish the tree I got planted onto public land nearby last year had some sort of information sign. There was a scheme with the local council called “trees for streets” which aimed to get people to nominate patches of council land for a tree to be planted to improve biodiversity and help increase tree cover! They picked hardy species which flower and fruit to benefit wildlife as much as possible! So we now have a crabapple tree in view and I love it. Kind of wish more people knew of the scheme as its still running
