Gym removed - Belgium

My gym whas removed without any reason.
The location was, Street View

Oostende

51.219768, 2.911814
Vlaamsplein 8400 oostende Belgie.
Can you help me please.

@PS22Geert based on the coordinates you provided the wayspot was probably removed due to no safe pedestrian access. It is located on a roundabout with no defined pedestrian pathway leading directly to it that I can see.

This is a roundabout without safe pedestrian access up to it. Side note: in the future, please create your own appeal topic instead of commenting in someone elses.

Unfortunately your Gym was in the middle of a roundabout that does not have designated pedestrian crossing access.

Niantic uses wayspots for many different games, each with different rules. So it is important to them to make sure players can safely walk up close enough to touch a wayspot.

There are no raids on the roundabout, there is a square next to it.
The name of this gym is flemish square and not flemish roundabout.
There is enough space on the square to do raids, there are even chairs and benches to do raids in an easy way with large groups 30 persons and more.
Please help us.

I think your best bet would be to nominate the square you are talking about. If it really is a place that people naturally gather, you should be able to describe that in the nomination.

Niantic will not bring back the wayspot that was in the roundabout. And while the name may have included the term ‘Square’, I suspect that the photo and description was for the object in the center of the roundabout.

There may be other things local to the area to nominate as well. Some folks on the forum are really good at looking at the maps and identifying things that could be eligible.

The coordinates you provided are for the roundabout, which is why everyone is talking about the roundabout.

The coordinates you provided were in the middle of a roundabout, and there’s what looks to be a sculpture in the middle of the roundabout. That’s why everyone was telling you that the nomination was removed for being in the middle of a roundabout.

If that’s not where the actual Gym was located and the Gym was not the sculpture in the middle of the roundabout, then it would’ve helped to include those details in your initial post.

I understand, bud to remove a gym after 6 years is to much to handle.
The Eiffel Tower in Paris is also a gym or stop. Do you have to stand on top of the Eiffel Tower to do a raid? Probably not, you’re just not standing next to it. Here also the fountain on the Flemish square which now also happens to be a roundabout, you don’t have to stand in the fountain to do a raid, you can stand on the square next to it.

You can safely walk up to and touch the Eiffel Tower. That is a requirement for safe pedestrian access for wayspots, as not all games have an 80 metre interaction radius like Pokémon Go does, and certain actions may require you to be directly at the wayspot.

Things in the middle of a roundabout don’t typically have a safe walkway leading up to them, and Niantic typically looks for a safe and marked crossing point to the centre. This roundabout doesn’t appear to have that, so the object in the centre doesn’t have safe pedestrian access and meets the removal criteria. I’m honestly surprised it managed to survive in game for so long, as Niantic did actually do a purge of roundabout wayspots several years back. They may have missed this one. Or maybe it was accepted shortly after the purge, as I can’t remember exactly when it was.

I understand your surprise and frustration since this has been a wayspot for a long while. But from Niantics perspective, accepted wayspots are for potential use in all current games (Ingress, Pokemon Go, Peridot, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now), as well as future games and applications. Rules for each of these is different. So in order for a wayspot to be eligible on Niantics map it must be safely accessible to pedestrians who must be able to touch the wayspot (in 2 dimensional space - so height is not a concern).

Roundabouts and pond aerators are things that do not meet this standard and are removed from the map when noticed and/or reported.

Is there really nothing that can be done for this gym. The location is perfect, the person who requested this gym 6 years ago just used an unfortunate photo.
I have been depressed lately and this is the last straw for me.

For reference, here is the image from the wayspot in question:

To me, that definitely looks like it was a wayspot for the water feature in the middle of the roundabout. That’s what the focus of the picture is.

That is satellite view of the area, along with the provided coordinates. That definitely suggests the wayspot was indeed for the water feature, and as you can see from satellite view, there are no marked crossing points that would allow you to go to the centre of the roundabout to touch the fountain. All the crossings are around the outside of the roundabout.

So yes, in this case I think you’re out of luck and that the wayspot was correctly removed for lacking safe pedestrian access. I can appreciate that’s not what you’d be hoping to hear, but the safe pedestrian access rules are what they are.

Hello @PS22Geert

I understand how deeply frustrating this situation is. I would love to say all will be ok but unfortunately I don’t think it will be possible to sort this in A way that puts things back they were.
I will try to explain.
The wayspot

This roundabout is not a safe place to stand. You refer to the photo being this roundabout. But you also say the title was not about the roundabout and I am unclear if the actual spot that gym was placed was on the roundabout or the square. It all sounds muddled.
As others have said the square looks as though it could be considered a social space and be eligible in its own right. We could give guidance about doing that. But unfortunately it is not the good News solution it might seem.

The gym
There are specific rules that Pokémon Go determines and uses that determines what will be a gym. This is outside the remit of wayfarer. This is all based on a grid of cells. This article explains.

https://pokemongohub.net/post/article/comprehensive-guide-s2-cells-pokemon-go/

When your gym went, because there are enough waypoints in that cell one of the pokestops would have changed into a gym. I do hope it’s not too far.
That gym will stay as a gym. Even if your wayspot was restored or you had a new one at the square it would simply be a Pokestop.

This will all be very disappointing ( I know because I have a recent similar local situation where we have lost a gym) so I do empathise with you.

It’s worth trying for the new stop at the square in case one day that cell gets enough pokestops to trigger a third gym in that cell.
In the meantime try to establish a different gym as a good location for meet-ups.

Actually, Eifel tower is now surrounded by security fences and gates, and you have to pay tickets before you can walk and touch it.

As such, Eifel tower should be removed according to rules  but whos gonna borher police that…

There is nothing against the rules about a ticketed entrance. Things like zoos, museums, and amusement parks require you to pay for entry, but still have eligible wayspots within. This is also true for things like gated communities.

The above was taken from the tooltip under appropriate in the review process.

Ah… learning by doing :joy: ty. I was certain restricted areas such as gated communities, military camps and areas requiring a ticket was NOT valid spots. Glad I never downvoted sny of these. I stand corrected.

No worries. There is a lot to know. And Niantic has spread the knowledge around in a few places.
