Gyms in downtown Grand Rapids

Hi there!

I understand that there are a lot of common issues with “my pokestop got approved and is not showing up”. But I am hoping that my current situation is somewhat unique and interesting to provide some discussions.

I am trying to get more Pokestops, but specifically gyms, in the main “center” of downtown Grand Rapids, MI. I am defining this area as the area around Rosa Parks Circle, which is kind of a “hub” of different sections of downtown, but definitely the main area of “Center City”.

Monroe Center Street is a shopping/pedestrian friendly area with wide sidewalks and enough interesting POIs. If you look at the screenshots I am trying to provide, there’s a 3+ block area with no gyms. It’s just rather surprisingly sparse, even with pretty good Pokestop coverage.

I personally have been hunting down specific POI on Monroe Center Street. But with a (nontraditional) school in a highrise on the street, and a police station one on end, it seems that all these great spots are being approved but then don’t make it into the game. I’m personally 2 for 15 on places in and around this area…(that is, 15 approvals and only 2 pokestops. including 1 in a cluster of 4 stops on a corner that I am incredulous didn’t spawn a gym!)

Any tips or help? I know about cell sizes and such but I haven’t successfully found a way to see them.

It requires a third party tool to see S2 cells, and we aren’t allowed to link to those on the forum. If you do a search for “wayfarer tools” then you should find a list of them, and an invite to the Wayfarer Discussion Discord, where you can ask for help using the tools.

I have adjusted the tool to only show gyms for this screenshot.

Three gyms is the most you can create through Wayfarer in a cell this size (L14) so it appears this area is full.

In this area, gyms can still be created.

Oh wow! Thanks for that. I see now how the cells breakdown our area and I end up just a tad unlucky. (Mostly due to bad gym clustering in triplicate close areas!) I guess those L14s end up being a bit larger than I expected.

Here is what that first L14 looks like if I don’t break it down for just gyms. Wow!

Yeah as a whole I do love the coverage just this one 4 block street that seems to central is kind of “buggy”…but again, seeing it as a full L14 does help gain perspective. Thank you!

GR is a great place to play, love the community there. I live just south of GR so my main play area tends to be the Rivertown Crossing Mall, but every so often I attend a Griffins game and get to walk around the city beforehand! Beautiful stuff there.
