How can I improve my nomination?

hello everyone can anybody helped me understand about my nomination? recently I have nominated a very famous local restaurant in my area and it got rejected. I did appeal again and it also gotten rejected. the reviewers provided me a reason where it says “The submission lacks uniqueness or historical and cultural meaning” I think I did nominate a “unique” wayspot of a famous local restaurant. I even provided a link for it for reviewers to authenticate my nomination on it.

ps: not mad just confused and need clarification that’s all. needed someone to help explain.

Hello! For us to better help determine why this rejection happened and how to possibly improve your nomination it would help if you posted pictures of your full nomination from your contribution page. That way we can see the full title, description, supporting info and both the main image and supporting image :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for sharing :hugs:
Restaurants are really really hard to sell. The lack of ‘uniqueness’ is a common rejection reason for them.
If you scroll through the forum you’ll find mostly the advice to give a ton of proof (links to articles, websites who mentioned that restaurant …).
I’ve heard a good leading question to think about how to sell them:
Why would I drive through two other towns to go to this restaurant?

So in a sense. before nominating a popoular local restaurant i should ask myself " Why would I drive through two other towns to go to this restaurant?" to provide better details for my description and elaboration on my nomination? bcs it did say that I lack details as well.

You should definitely resubmit this nomination. I think you just need to emphasise the significance of this restaurant to your community.

Here is what I have used in the past to get a restaurant approved as a wayspot

  • Description “Family run restaurant that produces high quality authentic Cantonese cuisine with a welcome dining experience, delicious food and great service. It is the ideal place to share a drink and a meal with family and friends and just chat”
  • Supporting Information “ Nomination is a Cantonese restaurant. It meets the qualifying criteria as being a good local place for socialising and exploration, is not a chain store, and is a favourite gathering place amongst both the local community and the “cheap eats” crowd. It has highly positive reviews through social media and review channels such as Google where it has an average of 4.4 out of 5 star rating (based on 445 reviews) and has 364 followers on Facebook. It is currently ranked # 5 of 66 restaurants in the **** area - refer TripAdvisor link. It offers locals an opportunity to sit, chat, share a drink and a meal with family and friends and strangers alike. Nomination is readily accessible with safe pedestrian access evident via sealed walkway. Website - ****”

I would also include in the supporting description any awards that the restaurant has won.

I hope that this provides with some good ideas when you resubmit your nomination. Good luck.

I think the main problem is that your nomination is a brand with multiple outlets throughout West Malaysia. I can see from their cawangan page that this is no longer a small local business. Large chains are generally considered generic businesses, medium-sized chains might be a gray area but it probably doesn’t help. Restoran Tiga Budak Gemok Original - Senarai Cawangan

Also, for future reference, another issue is that your description and supporting statement need to sell the reviewer on why the restaurant is unique or has local flavour. It’s not enough to merely say that something is good or famous, you ought to explain WHY it’s good or famous. If you can make a reviewer want to check out a place if they pass by, they’re much more likely to vote to accept.

Most of the information you provided is rather general and doesn’t make the place sound special.

“The restaurant started it’s business since 2017” → Every restaurant has to have been started at some point, merely stating the opening year doesn’t really say anything about whether the food there is good or unique.

“started from a small stall now made I to a restaurant” → Telling a story can be good, but again this doesn’t really tell us anything about the quality of the food or why it’s popular.

“There many locals come to this place and eat” → This describes literally any F&B place. It doesn’t explain why this place is more cool than any other F&B outlet.

“operating since 3 years ago” → Description mentions since 2017, this section says 3 years. I’m guessing the brand has been around since 2017 but this outlet was opened only three years ago? But still, this might be confusing to reviewers and might also encourage them to reject if they believe the information provided is inaccurate or out-of-date.

“the brand is quite famouse in our local area” → Being a famous brand can actually disqualify a nomination if it’s a chain business with a lot of outlets as that can be considered generic. Like in this case, where the brand has already expanded to different states.

When nominating a unique local business (avoid chains), consider the following:

Highlight the location if it is special. Is there a good view? Is it located in an area that is otherwise also good to explore? (Note: No need to do this if it’s just some normal location like in a normal commercial block.)

Describe the actual food. What sort of cuisine does it serve? What is its most famous dish, the thing you will drag your friends here to eat? For example, if you nominate a restaurant that serves nasi lemak, why/how is their nasi lemak better and more special than any other random nasi lemak from any random kopitiam stall?

Try to describe any unique decor it might have. Does the restaurant have a theme or cool decorations? Cool artwork? If yes, you can show reviewers that it’s not just a good place to eat/socialise but also to explore.
