I keep getting items to review that aren’t in my selected language

Hello! I’m located in South Texas, and I keep getting submissions to review that are in Spanish. As I don’t speak or read Spanish, I keep skipping these, but I don’t know why I keep getting them if my language is set to English. Is there any way to guarantee the submission reviews I’m presented with are in my set language?

Welcome to the forum @kimbracewell

This is expected behaviour. You have 3 review areas where you will get reviews from: your home location, your bonus location (both of those can be set on the wayfarer website), and the location you’ve recently played Niantic games in.

Whilst those sound like localised locations, Niantic uses a grid system of S2 Cells to determine locality, and the Cells they use in this instance are Level 6 Cells, with the review areas each consisting of 9 of these Level 6 Cells. A Level 6 Cell is pretty big, and a 3×3 box of them is obviously quite a substantial area. You receive reviews from anywhere within these areas, plus from across the rest of your country if the nomination has been upgraded.

As you’re close to the border with Mexico, it’s likely that some of the cells in at least one of your review areas extend into Mexico, and that’s partly why you’re seeing Spanish nominations. It could also be that there are Spanish speaking US citizens who are submitting in Spanish, which is perfectly fine to do.

You can skip them as you have been doing, or you can review them using a translator. Personally I prefer the latter option, as it’s good to help out regardless of language.
