Hi I don’t know what to do I got a pokestop removed when I wasn’t trying to and then I reported my gym at my work bc it was doing the same thing - only giving research to scan a pokestop nearby and I thought that was a glitch? What can I do?
Hello and welcome @TwiliWeaver
Can you provide more details please and can I check my understanding.
First a place giving out a research task to scan another pokestop/gym is normal behaviour.
This is about 2 locations 1 a pokestop and 1 a gym?
If you are comfortable can you provide details of these. Ideally title, what it is and the location ( co ordinates are good if possible)
Do they both still exist at the locations?
Yes a pokestop and a gym, the pokestop’s name was The Salvage Yard

I didn’t realize it wasn’t normal behavior because it was giving the same one to scan a nearby pokestop for a straight week. The pokestop just disappeared in the last 2 hours
The gym is a mural on the side of this building here
It’s titled “Joplin Main Street Mural”
37.0752440, -94.5142121
It is still currently there and the report went through but has not been accepted.
I sincerely apologize please help me fix this everyone at my work plays and this will be all my fault
For future reference, if you spin a different stop that has a scan research, and you keep hold of that research instead of completing it or deleting it (it doesn’t take up a regular research slot, it has its own separate slot), you won’t be able to pick up any other scan tasks, and any Pokéstops that would give them out will instead give out regular research.
If you don’t already have a scan task, then it is normal behaviour for some stops and gyms to attempt to give out scan tasks for a nearby Pokéstop or gym. It doesn’t have to be from the stop or gym that you’re being asked to scan for the task.
I just feel like such a moron, we have 8 people who very consistently use this gym every day for raids and I’m paranoid I screwed everyone over and I feel like such a jerk. I wasn’t trying to do this
First don’t panic
So you reported the gym, but the report was rejected and the gym is still there? Is that correct?
I don’t think that anything will happen to the gym.
From what I can see the mural is still there so that is ok.
The pokestop you say disappeared.
Has that mural actually gone?
If it has then that is why it has been removed. And it won’t return.
But that should be it.
You might be able to replace the salvage yard
This mural should be submittable
Do check on the submission screen that it doesn’t appear already ( I can’t tell as I do t have access to a map of all wayspots)
So you could get a pokestop back.
The gym hasn’t been rejected for deletion yet, but the mural is still there and nothing has changed. It’s fairly recently been scanned as well. I guess I’ll know tomorrow if its been accepted
Okay. I’ll try that, thanks!
What did your report say why it should go?
My report just said that it was continually giving field research to scan and I chose the option about “AR Suitability” when reporting
Ah ok.
I’m not familiar with how those Pokémon Go withdrawal requests work.
At least you know more about how it works.
That PokeStop was functioning normally and the bot system and/or your report reasoning is why the Stop was removed. There’s nothing you can do about the Stop being removed other than to go back to the area and submit it as a new Stop yourself. elijusttrying gave you some really good advice on how to take pictures to do this. Don’t feel bad about it, it happens! Everyone’s gone through learning about these things at some point or another.
Truly, I needed a much longer explanation that this when I started playing.
I’m mainly replying at this point for anyone else that may end up here if they think there’s an issue with the Field Research generated by a PokeStop in regards to AR Mapping.
Bottom line: Do not report the PokeStop itself because of the research you get.
The issue isn’t the PokeStop, the issue is the research. But there are ways around the research if you don’t like it, you just have to understand the mechanics of the game.
– There are two types of Field Research tasks: standard Field Research, and AR Mapping.
– Players can hold a maximum of 3 Field Research tasks + 1 AR Mapping task at any given point.
– You can get one task per Stop daily, but you have to have open space for it.
– Everyone gets the same research from a Stop.
– The assigned task normally changes once daily at midnight but can change mid-day for events.
Just because you spin a Stop doesn’t mean it will ask you to scan that particular Stop. The AR Mapping feature assigns a task based on high-traffic, permanent, or recently changed locations to verify their physical safety and existence, often used to validate if a Stop/Gym should remain. These scans are used to create 3D models of the map, as well. The Stop you are asked to scan is relative to your location.
This is why many people dislike AR Mapping, especially in rural areas where removing Stops makes the game harder to play.
Further rambling on how tasks/AR work: If you have 3 non-AR tasks, and one open space, your next spin will generate an AR Mapping task and if you already have an AR Mapping task it will generate a non-AR task. (You can also delete the AR Mapping task you get from a Stop and spin that Stop again when able to try getting a non-AR task. But if you completed the AR Mapping task, you will not receive another task at all on that second spin.)
Some people don’t like to do AR Mapping because people think you’re filming them, they play after dark and it requires good lighting, their camera is broken, or they don’t want to waste their data on the upload. No matter the reason, if you don’t want to do AR Mapping, just leave the research at the top and future spins will generate non-AR tasks. Unless you’re in a rural area or extremely limited on movement and need to complete a certain number of tasks in a day, leaving it there forever won’t really impact gameplay beyond that single day when you get the AR task and decide to leave it.
You might get a different Stop every time for days on end and then get the same Stop for your next 15 tasks. For example, you might spin Stop A and be given an AR task for Stop C but complete it and spin Stop B and given an AR task to scan Stop C again. My local park just had major construction done in the last few years but most of our Stops were from the first 3 years of the game. Last month I went out for Spotlight Hour only to have five back-to-back AR tasks for the same Stop. The Stop in question is still physically there. The 6th time it told me to scan that particular Stop, I left the research incomplete and haven’t gotten a new AR Mapping task since.
Cases where “Not suitable for AR scanning” would be appropriate would be how some places have laws against taking pictures of certain things – like a stop at a concert venue while a concert is taking place. Because of how these scans are used, creative scanning is perfectly fine and encouraged. Some cities have “Welcome To” signs that are on an island between sides of traffic. At first glance, this may seem unsuitable, but can actually be achieved by going to the farthest point within reach and walking toward the sign with your camera pointed at it.
Remember, if you don’t want to complete an AR task, you can just leave it and continue to spin for standard Research Tasks!
