Invalid wayspot: painted over artbox

  • Wayspot Title: Staggin’ Peaches and Pears

  • City: San Jose, CA
  • Country: US

  • Additional Information (if any):

It was just painted over in the last couple of weeks. Interestingly, a mural was just put up on the sound wall across the street. The paint on this box was pealing quite a bit, so I wouldn’t be surprised if together they were part of a neighborhood beautification effort.

First is the current wayspot image, then some clipped street views, some some recent photos I captured.

Niantic is very reluctant to remove something as “does not exist” if it is still shown on streetview - unless perhaps you attach a scan, or geotagged photos, in the text box of your request.

Are you positive that the city hasn’t removed that artwork so it can paint a new one? Maybe it’s wise to wait.

Niantic has said that for murals, it’s fine to add a new picture if the original was painted over with something else.

My photos were geotagged when I uploaded them. Is that info stripped during processing?

Anyway, I shared a Google Photos album with those photos and photos I took back in May and already added to the wayspot: https://photos.app.goo.gl/7Wanv1Xykh6BLdkTA (verified private/incognito browsing friendly). That also shows the geotags.

If they get repainted, then someone will get a chance to nominate them anew. I see no problem with that. And, from my experience, it is easier to do that than get existing photos, titles, and descriptions updated.

Your procedure is correct. Wait for Niantic to request additional information.

These are fundamental points on the map that people in South San Jose use to play actually play the game.

Dear Niantic I hope you reconsider and leave this waypoint as a POI in game for now. If you see this and reach out to me I’d happily reach out a non profit that focuses on bringing art to our streets. I’ll even pay for a new art piece myself. LET ME KNOW

That’s nice, but the object is gone so i’m not sure what you’re trying to do here?

You do realize that BeautifySJ requires a few months for the organizing group (typically a neighborhood association, not an individual) to get a new artbox vetted, approved, financed, and painted.

Thanks for the appeal, @nexushoratio. After reviewing the additional evidence provided, we’ve decided to retire the Wayspot in question.
