Memorial benches etc

Can I please seek verification of whether or not a memorial bench, plaque, tree etc is an acceptable wayspot unless the person or persons named are of significance? I thought that the memorial needed to be for someone or something of local significance. For example a decorated war hero, local celebrity, and not “John & Susan”

You are correct. Memorial benches are significant if they are for a significant person, “John & Susan” are generally not significant.

Some Pokemon Go players will accept almost everything and once accepted, they won’t meet removal criteria, so you may well see generic memorial benches in the game even though they don’t meet eligibility.

Thanks for confirming my understanding was correct. I will continue rejecting insignificant memorials

Benches can also serve as scenic viewpoints. So, you will only see the result of it being accepted, but not the rationale the submitter used to prove it met that criteria. I just submitted a little seating area with two benches on a boardwalk/walking trail that overlooks a lake. They weren’t even memorial benches. But it was a great place to observe nature. (I watched a blue heron catch a fish.)

Agreed. That’s a completely different submission type and would be reviewed accordingly. If submitted with a title suggestion of memorial bench it would be rejected unless it meets the criteria

The description should make this super obvious.

What can be a factor for memorial benches is if the bench is decorated, too.

I have submitted a lot of memorial benches recently but as scenic viewpoints and I didn’t even mentjon the memorial aspect in my nomination because it wasnt the point of it, and I didn’t want to risk it being rejected for being a standard sort of family memorial when it was the view I was interested in. Typically with those I take a picture from behind or to the side of the bench rather than showing the plaque, ie focussing on the scenery
