I would like to report a possible sync/recalculation issue affecting Gym distribution.
- Location (center of cell): -12.005440, -77.056534
- The S2 Level 14 cell currently contains 20+ Wayspots
- All counted POI are visible in Pokémon GO and located within the same S2 Level 14 cell
- At one point, the cell correctly had 3 non-sponsored Gyms
- The issue was first observed on March 22, 2026
However:
- One of the Gyms was moved to a different location (outside the original cell), as part of a correction to its real-world location
- After that change, the cell now only has 2 non-sponsored Gyms
- There is also 1 sponsored Gym in the cell, which I understand is not part of the conversion calculation
- The total number of Wayspots in the cell remains ≥20, which should correspond to 3 Gyms
Issue:
The system does not appear to be recalculating Gym distribution after the Wayspot relocation, even though the cell meets the requirements for 3 Gyms.
Expected behavior:
The cell should contain 3 non-sponsored Gyms, based on the current number of Wayspots.
Request:
Please review this cell and trigger a recalculation if necessary, as it appears to be stuck in an outdated state.
Thank you.

This understanding is wrong. Sponsored gyms do count towards the total number of gyms in a cell. They can result in a cell with more than 3 gyms if they’re added after the cell has already reached maximum gym capacity, but if that cell then loses a gym and goes down to 3 gyms, the sponsored one will function as one of the regular gyms and you won’t get a fourth gym to replace the lost one.

I can confirm, while sponsored gyms can exist beyond the three gym limit, they will count against the limit.
Story… had a friend trying to get another gym in his grid. It had around 10 pokestops and 2 non sponsored gyms plus one sponsored. After increasing to 20+, a third gym did not appear. Then (a month or two later) that sponsor terminated their sponsorship, and when the sponsored gym disappeared, a non sponsored was generated to replace it.

Hey @KairosLG ,
Thanks for your feedback. We’re constantly making improvements to Pokémon GO. Occasionally, you may notice changes to the PokéStops or Gyms in your community. While we’re unable to fulfill requests to change any PokéStops into Gyms at this time, we recognize the value of a feature such as this and hope you continue to seek out adventures at other PokéStops and Gyms in your surrounding communities. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us again if you encounter any other issues in the future.
