Hi everyone, I would like to seek clarification regarding Gym distribution within an S14 cell. I understand that typically 2 Gyms appear at 6 Wayspots and 3 Gyms at 20 Wayspots within a Level 14 S2 cell. However, in my area, when I check the Niantic map, there are only about 15 Wayspots present, yet there are already 3 Gyms in the same S14 cell. Based on the usual criteria, this should only result in 2 Gyms instead of 3.
I am planning to submit additional Wayspots to reach the 20 POI threshold for a third Gym, but this situation has caused some confusion. Could this be due to legacy placements, previous map conditions, or a recalculation that has not yet been updated? I would appreciate any insights or clarification from the community. Thank you.
There are a couple of ways this could have happened. There could have been enough total Pokestops and gyms to promote the three, then some of the Pokestops were later removed. The gyms would have retained status.
If any of these are older, location edits used to work differently. If a gym had been location corrected into this L14, it would have retained the gym status. Location edits now can only be done in game over a short distance, and the game status should be recalculated when moved.
Be aware that any of this information of how gyms are created is from community observation, not anything Niantic has stated anywhere. So breaking the S2 cell rules is not something Niantic “fixes”.

But the bottom line is that no matter how many are added when the algorithm applies it will see there are 3 and that it’s full.
There are in my view already some objects that really are surprising to see approved.
I got asked from my community, there are actually 20 wayspot before but some had been removed so the gym currently remain as three.
But the problem is one of gym appeared insied a gated property which no one able to go inside unless the resident there, is there any method or is there chances to wait for map sync?
If you mean a gated community, that kind of location is perfectly acceptable. Since you mentioned “the resident” I wanted to ask if this is an SFPRP location - Single Family Private Residential Property. If this is a private home, then it can be reported for removal.
Gated communities are allowed - as long as it is actually a community and not a single house.
While safe pedestrian access is required, that doesn’t mean accessible by everyone. I know a pokestop that is inside a large, employees only government facility…. unreachable from outside…. got submitted by an employee and approved.
