My objection was rejected

Hello dear community,

I have a question regarding the submission of POIs. In the past, the reason “private property” has often been given as grounds for rejection. However, there are several unique fence elements in my area that, in my opinion, could qualify as interesting locations.

I’ve also noticed that there are many existing POIs featuring graffiti or other types of artwork. There are also unusual and fascinating places that have been accepted. Are these older submissions that were approved under previous criteria but would likely be rejected today?

What stands out to me is that many of these artworks are located on private property, often directly on building facades. This raises the question of how the boundary between public interest and private space is currently being handled.

I’m just trying to understand whether it’s still possible to submit creative or culturally interesting POIs, or if currently only things like utility boxes and playgrounds are being accepted as valid stops.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I don’t have a full answer for your first question so I will leave that to somebody else. In my opinion, the nomination you posted here has nothing unique to it. It is just a basic fence in my opinion and doesn’t meet the core crititeria of being a Great place to explore, socialise or sport.

Lot’s of things are submitted and accepted as wayspots. Attempting to claim it’s /only/ certain things that make it through (in this case utility boxes and playgrounds) is a little disengenous.

It’s possible that existing wayspots wouldn’t be accepted now. Maybe the criteria changed, maybe the wayspot should never have been approved by the community in the first place, but it’s harder to get things removed than to get them added in the first place.

Murals and other artwork (as opposed to graffiti in general) on property boundaries are valid if those are not SFPRP (single-family private residential property). If on the boundary of a business, shop, cafe, apartment block, they they are allowed. This is what “private property” is used as a shorthand for - not all private property, but SFPRP.

This has to be the case, because if all wayspots on private property were rejected, large swathes of “public space” would be out-of-bounds, since in many areas “public space” is privately owned. Niantic, now Scopely, make the clear distinction as being SFPRP not allowed, everything else is available

Adding this to what has already been said to give more context to what kinds of murals or street art can be accepted:

Of course, the examples I mentioned earlier were a bit of an exaggeration. In reality, the only types of POIs in my area are the ones I mentioned before. Occasionally, there might be a nature reserve or a church.

Now I understand how it works, and I really appreciate that.

At least I now know that I will not be able to submit any more suggestions in my area that could realistically become a POI.

From my point of view, a fence like the one I mentioned is just as interesting to explore or to look at as a typical picture. But at least I can learn from this experience.

Well keep trying. Or you can try working with local community to set up LFL in local park or something similar

I doubt the property rule will change because that could lead to real life legal issue.

What you can do moving forward is by keep trying. If you find something that you think might be eligible, you can ask advice here in nomination support before submission
