Every photo that I have submitted at night has been rejected. Should I only take photos during the day as it is part of the rules or have I just been unlucky. It is getting much harder to take photos during daylight here in the northern hemisphere. Any advice would be great! Thanks!
Can you share some examples of the rejected pictures?
A night picture that is clear and can see the PoI well should be acceptable, but a dark picture where its hard to see things should be rejected
I’ve had some things accepted with night pictures but not too many. Reviewers can be overly picky at times
And yes its definitely challenging to have any daylight for submissions at the moment (I’m in the uk)
I think it used to be worded differently, something about dark photos should be rejected. Now
https://wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/new/help/photo-guidelines clearly has the rejection reason as
- Pitch black photos where the Wayspot isn’t clearly visible
so nighttime photos are allowed. But I am not certain that all reviewers know this.
Examples would help us advise.
I think you’re right - I think people do sometimes get rejections for photos taken at night even when they’re clear and high quality
I think I may have just been unlucky with what J submitted. I submitted a little free library at night and apparently it was a duplicate. (I didn’t see a wayspot for it) and the second one I had to fully change the wayspot so they were probably a bit overly critical about it. I am only asking this as there is a bridge near me that I could possibly make a wayspot but I am concerned as I only have time at night. And atop if that a reviewer might thing that the bridge isn’t a good wayspot. I might just wait until spring though just for safety’s sake. But thanks!
You can always take some pictures and decide if they come out well enough to use ![]()
You can also share ideas here and we can advise if it seems like a good submission or not
Not sure what weather you’re having, but keep in mind that sometimes it gets quite bright at night when overcast or snow is on the ground.
I’ve added nighttime photos to many of my live Wayspots and I’ve submitted a decent handful of new contributions with night photos depending on the subject and lighting.
I do think I’d struggle accepting if headlights are distracting or it is otherwise difficult to determine what the candidate is, but generally I approve night photos. We’re in this together and rarely have all the time for perfect conditions.
If your camera doesn’t to it automatically then switch to night mode if the image is dark, however a lot of wayspots look better at night if they are lit up IMO..
One thing to consider with night photos is whether you can gather enough context for the reviewers to still be able to confirm location - night shots aren’t disallowed at all and can be very good (as illustrated above), but if it’s impossible to make out any of the surroundings in a pitch dark supporting photo and there isn’t much other location information available, they might penalize you indirectly.
So it’s not about light and dark or any sort of photo quality notion at all, it’s about whether your photos can fulfill their function of showing the object in its environment. A nomination is considered in its entirety as always ![]()
