Nomination to review has same photo as existing wayspot

I hope your persistence is convincing Niantic to write code to automatically remove duplicates.

This seems like code an intern could write this summer. And they’re probably now finalizing who to hire and what they’ll do.

Really, ML should be taught to auto-reject any nominations with the same photos as existing Wayspots. That would make the most sense.

Just got this one to review. Wondering how I should reject these cases at this point… an abuse option under Accuracy? Report? Just marking it a duplicate doesn’t seem right after the response to your report.

I mark them duplicates, because they are.
If Niantic takes that information yet degrades their database, that’s up to them.

idk. I marked it duplicate as instructed previously and then replied to the reply about my previous report.

Good question. The Report button doesn’t have an Other option, like in Accuracy. Aaron did say to mark as duplicates, but being this keeps happening (and yes, I have gotten the koi fish a few times, too), I’d maybe take a screenshot and report via the abuse link or in help chat.

I think that’s what I’ll do if I receive any like these from now on: screenshot, mark as duplicate, then report.

I’ll likely try to do the same from here on out

I believe at this point it’s a honeypot and all part of Niantic’s great Social Experiment with us.

So does that mean we can stop reviewing for now? Asking for a friend.

LOL the honeypots were already in place for this December 2019 blog

These resources combined with our existing infrastructure of quality control measures will help to make sure that Wayfinders who are not adhering to a high standard of review quality are removed from the program.

These measures include actively monitoring the platform for abuse from both Submitters & Reviewers. We’ve also taken steps to pre-approve or reject certain Wayspot nominations prior to them entering Wayfarer. Reviewers who disagree with our assessment may see a dip in their performance score.

From Niantic Wayfarer - 1 Month Check In – Niantic Labs
EDIT: The blog post title is because it had been a month since OPR had transitioned to Wayfarer.

I know they were doing random spot checks for a few years, which is why I got caught out once or twice before (lucky no ban or suspensions). I realised at that point I am not really qualified to review until I really understood the criteria, which is still the case today.

Another one, and there was no response when I tried to reply to the previous ticket. If no response by Monday, will make a new report.
This nomination info:

Avenue One Community: Clubhouse Archway
37.242707, -121.797782

Existing Wayspot:
Avenue One Community: Clubhouse Archway
37.242708,-121.797781

This one is a portal
Avenue One Community: Clubhouse Archway

I got that one too. I get lots of exact duplicates.

And lots of walk-thru bland pergola sidewalk entries that aren’t a place to socialize, explore, or exercise.

I got confused for a minute there. I knew I had seen the exact same photo with the truck framed in the arch, but it isn’t the same photo as on the wayspot:

But it is the same photo as reported here and has been added as a photo on this portal:

What is going on here?

If I were to be a conspiracy theorist, I suspect people are knowingly abusing the system in order to get some reward or something. Don’t know if it is a local community thing or something else.

I noticed this too… my guess is someone flipped the photo in pogo… purposely or not who knows.

I think it’s a Niantic bug. Hitting submit once submits it twice. Or maybe if you choose Upload Later, it uploads it now AND later. Or maybe AI approves it AND sends it to human reviewers.

It’s just too widespread to be that nominators everywhere decided to nominate everything multiple times.

I did get a reply saying they had “taken action on 3 Wayspots” so I think the reports are caught up.

Aren’t these all in the same general area? My map skills are atrocious, though. California would all be the same general area to me.

I thought I was getting them from all over… but I couldn’t say for sure. :woman_shrugging: Niantic knows now tho, thanks to your efforts. Thanks!
