As some game use OSM and some Google maps would it not make sense to have an option to viewe the map (when checking location) to be both viewable with OSM and google maps.
and not just google maps which is currently the only opction avalable in wayfairer.

Where I am Google seems to be good, but I know there are other places where other maps might be better. So it seems something to consider.
Do you mean in the game when you are on nominating or when you are reviewing on the site? There are external tools which will allow you to do this:
The people who are involved in making these tools include ambassadors, and Niantic has even on occasion suggested people use one of their tools - specifically the challenge review counter before Niantic added one of their own. If you choose to use external tools, you can find them at wayfarer.tools
I don’t know what kind of device you do your reviewing on so cannot guarantee compatibility, but there are indeed external tools that can do this in the form of a link or map tiles if you need this urgently.
I sometimes add a link to OSM (or even Bing Maps) in the supporting text if it shows the wayspot better. I think it helps.
