Community Feedback: The Importance of a 'Wayspot' Map

Hi everyone,

The Wayfarer Ambassadors are seeking feedback from the community about how users currently use Niantic-provided maps (such as Ingress Intel) in part of their Wayfarer experience, and what feedback might need to be provided to Scopely once Wayfarer changes ownership.

How I Use Maps

There are a variety of map tools which Niantic has (or has had) which show Wayspots, including:

  • Ingress Intel (shows all Ingress Portals worldwide)
  • Ingress Mission Creator (shows all Ingress Portals worldwide; allows users to search by portal title/description)
  • Wayfarer app (defunct) (showed all Wayspots worldwide)
  • Geospatial Browser (intended for developers only) (shows all Wayspots worldwide)

I personally find that maps such as Ingress Intel are very useful in my day-to-day Wayfarer activities. Examples of activities I use Ingress Intel for which relate to Wayfarer include:

  • Looking for areas where I can submit new Wayspots (e.g. playgrounds or sports courts with no current Wayspots)
  • Identifying Wayspots which need location edits or other corrections
  • Identifying places where I could go to explore Wayspots (e.g. a park to visit where I would like to take photos of Wayspots or do scans)
  • Marking my Wayfarer submissions with pins so I can keep track of what I have submitted and what I am planning to submit
  • Using different basemap providers (e.g. Google Satellite vs. Bing Maps vs. Esri) to confirm correct Wayspot locations during review
  • Identifying possible fake Wayspots in an area for reporting

Announced Scopely Changes

After the Spatial/Scopely split, “Ingress contributions won’t show up in Pokémon GO, Ingress, or Monster Hunter Now and vice versa” (source). This means that the Ingress Intel map will begin to diverge from the database of Wayfarer/PGO POIs. I would not be able to use the Ingress Intel map, for example, to see if a new sculpture or mural has already been submitted and approved in Wayfarer/PGO without physically going there myself to check.

It is “unknown at this time” whether Scopely will make an equivalent of Ingress Intel for the Wayfarer POI database (source).

It has been said that “for Pokémon GO players using Wayfarer, your experience will remain unchanged” (source). If there is zero access to a map of POIs post-split, then I strongly beg to differ. If there is no access to any map (other than Campfire gyms) then my Wayfarer experience is going to change significantly.

Your Say

Ambassadors would love to hear your thoughts about how you interact with maps as part of your Wayfarer experience. How do you use maps currently as an Explorer? What do you think will be the possible impact on your experience without being able to use tools such as Ingress Intel in the future? Could be make a tool that’s even better for Wayfarer than any of the current tools? What features would make your Wayfarer experience even better?

In addition to your comments, we would love it if you could take the time to fill out some of the following polls. This will give us some quantitative data which we can present through our channels as Wayfarer Ambassadors.

Do you currently use Niantic map tools like Ingress Intel as part of your Wayfarer experience?

Do you think Scopely should prioritise creating a map which shows Wayfarer POIs?

  • High Priority - This is something I feel is important
  • Medium Priority - I would benefit from the feature but it is not important
  • Low Priority - This would not impact me significantly / I don’t care

Some map services (e.g. Ingress Intel) are available on both internet browsers and phones. Other map services (e.g. Wayfarer App) were available on phone/tablet only and could be accessed from a computer. Where would you like to be able to access a hypothetical Scopely map from?

Campfire is coming to Scopely. Would just the Campfire map (as is) be enough for your Wayfarer needs?

  • Yes - I use maps for Wayfarer and the current Campfire map already does everything I could possibly need for Wayfarer.
  • No - I use maps for Wayfarer and the current Campfire map does not do everything I need.
  • N/A - I don’t use map tools for Wayfarer.

One option I forgot to add: If it’s possible to have a map which shows all the photos, I’d love to be able to see the age of the photos. Right now to do that, I have to hope it’s in PGO and then either get a postcard or go there in person. If it’s not in PGO then I am out of luck!

Photo ages help me in identifying things like correct locations. If a photo is 10 years old, I will check Streetview from 2015 to try to locate the object. It also helps in understanding when there has been a change in appearance, e.g. A sign for a church has changed, and I want to vote for the newer photo.

Agree that we’ll need a map in the future, even if it’s just for Scopely-owned games and their Wayspots. The 2 things I use the Intel map for is to help those asking where their stop is, as well as finding Wayspots that need edits or removal.

If PoGo keeps the S2 cells, we’ll need a map to help those that ask where their stop is, as it’s such a common question. And what is Wayfarer is opened up to the other Scopely games, and what if we start getting asked about where those game play locations are?

I reached L8 in Ingress a few weeks before submissions/edits were removed, and I had a list of Ingress-only Wayspots that I wanted to get to and edit. The worst is a statue of St. Mary at a church of the same name, but it’s titles “Blurry Mary,” and both photos are extremely blurry. You can actualy see this statue on Street View,. and it’s in no way blurry. Now, since that was an Ingress-only Wayspot, I can’t submit any edits right now, even get a new photo submitted.

Campfire could have a separate Wayfarer section, like it does for each game, and it could be tooled to show all Wayspots, look them up on another map app, like Google Maps, see S2 cells, etc. So, while I don’t think Campfire right now is enough, maybe it could be used for a Wayfarer map, but tooled to how many of us use the current maps.

The current intel map is essential to providing a good wayfarer experience, and it’s something I use every day for all aspects of wayfarer. I’m not sure I can keep going without it tbh. It’s how I plan most of my submissions before I go outside. So I really hope they will give us an alternative, even if it’s just the wayspots with titles and description and photos at the start, but all the other features suggested here would definetly be beneficial aswell.

It will improve the quality of the database and the submissions, and help both us and scopely in removing abuse and bad data aswell.

Wayfarer would not work without a map.

Yeah. Frankly is funny how people keep asking whereismypokestop. I also have case myself that my submission got marked as duplicate even though there is nothing in ingress and pogo. Turn out after checking geospatial, the wayspot indeed duplicate but under exclusion rule of both ingress and pogo and i have no way of knowing at that time, because i remote submit it.

My concern about using Campfire as the only map source is that it is (currently) app only. For my workflow, being able to access from a computer is important, as that is where I review and plan. When I plan, I create pins on Intel using my laptop and then synchronise those pins to my phone so I am able to access them when I am out and about submitting. But being unable to use a laptop at all would be a significant negative for me.

Also, one of the benefit of Ingress Intel was the vibrant developer community. I highly value being able to develop plug-ins which can add features which are wanted by the broader community – but that wouldn’t be possible on an app. I don’t think any map tool will have everything I want, but I would rather have a browser-based map with 20% of the features I want (and be able to develop plug-ins for the rest of the features), vs. have an app with 40% of the features I want but not be able to develop any plug-ins whatsoever.

In regards to the Campfire map not being good enough, I am not a developer, but I need a desktop map to be able to read it. Progressive lens are not app friendly, and I don’t do anything on my phone that I can do on my laptop. I hardly ever use Campfire, except to post and like shiny catches, and check in to Community Ambassador meetups.

Thanks for doing this poll. There are one or two options that if approved could lead to abuse, such as being able to review / report certain wayspots via the map. Especially if people are able to determine who submitted it, etc. and launch a malicious removal request. But overall, I think this is a good poll post.

I don’t see where it asks for the ability to review from the map? And reporting frivolously is already clarified as abuse here Reporting Abuse in Wayfarer — Wayfarer Help Center

Wayfinders who submit inappropriate abuse reports may also receive a warning or punishment for repeat offenses.

So imo it would just make it easier for explorers trying to keep the map accurate.

What I meant was … some of the options if Scopely implimented, such as editing locations, titles, description, etc. from the map it could lead to abuse… just an opinion not intended as a criticism of the poll…

I was on the old forum and there was lots of discussion of “map cells” which Niatnic never acknowledged. I feel that if Wayfarer was more open and honest with users, there would be less frustration. I regularly have to explain to people in my own community why “X point of interest will not be a Pokéstop”. If the guidelines were clearer in this regard, it would prevent a lot of angst.

I have a limited number of nominations, so I always check to see if a nomination is going to appear in the game I play (Pokémon GO), so that I do not waste the nomination. This is especially in important because I live not to far for a large rural expanse and so for those people in the nearby villages, I need to really efficient and maximise the number of Wayspots, because that it the foundation that allows a community of players to grow. I am very careful with my placements when visiting a new place and I always do a lot of pre-planning so that I can ensure the widest amount of players are satisifed.

When I was drafting options, this did cause some conversation between Ambassadors too.

But consider this: You can currently request location edits >10m for any Wayspot worldwide using the Help Chat.

The process for me is:

  1. Find Wayspot on Intel
  2. Switch tab to Wayfarer.
  3. Start help ticket for location edit >10m
  4. Switch tab to Intel
  5. Copy the title
  6. Switch tab to Wayfarer
  7. Paste the title
  8. Switch tab to Intel
  9. Copy the current coordinates
  10. Switch tab to Wayfarer
  11. Paste the current coordinates
  12. Switch tab to Google Maps
  13. Copy the correct coordinates
  14. Switch tab to Wayfarer
  15. Paste the correct coordinates

Now imagine being able to do that same process but just from the map, and not needing to switch tabs seven times for one location edit.

The 15 step walkthrough requires more work than being able to go on a map and make change submissions. For Ingress players, you can go up to 25km for edits, so there are some restrictions. With being able to edit on a map, especially from a Desktop where there is no GPS / Location Service option available (It’s disabled on my PC as an example), will they be able to make edits worldwide or be denied the ability to edit?

If the ability to edit on the map is implimented with safeguards to prevent abuse, I could buy into it, but without the safeguards, it’s open to abuse and will either lead to Scopely being swamped with false reports, or communities being without legitimate Wayspots that they need to enjoy the game.

I think it would definitely need consideration, for sure.

Wayfarer App allowed users to make edits worldwide. As an Ambassador, I was one of the groups who had permission to use the app. It was very satisfying seeing a review on the Duplicates map with horrible spelling and being able to submit a title edit, despite it being on the other side of the country.

The distance for Ingress edits was 100 km.

Ok, I thought it was 25km for some reason. My bad.

I think that if the edits worldwide was to be supported, it would need to have some safeguards in place. What would those safeguards look like? I don’t know how to best answer that without proper discussion.

25km was the nomination distance.

At this stage a map itself is hypothetical, so this is hypotheticals on top of hypotheticals but…

If edits were allowed via the map:

  • Have users be logged in and their account be Wayfarer-eligible (e.g. logged out users and low level accounts can see the map but not edit).
  • Have the edits be subject to the Niantic abuse ladder (e.g. misuse can lead to suspensions/bans)
  • Have a limit on the number of edits, or make them consume the available edit quota from PGO (to prevent mass spamming)

I don’t know how much additional risk this would offer compared to users being able to edit them within 100km distance.

One thought I have had in the past is that someone with malicious intent (if they really wanted to) could theoretically GPS spoof anywhere in PGO and make abusive edits in-app. Whereas users with good intent cannot make the edits.

Considering that the edit range has now changed (for me) from 100 km to 80 metres… I now can’t even edit descriptions on Pokestops across from my house.

Oh, and the other reason for suggesting this is so edits can be made on Wayspots that aren’t in Pokemon Go! Right now, we can only edit Wayspots which are Pokestops and Gyms, plus anything that happens to be a Power Spot. It would be really nice to have a way to edit Lightship-only Wayspots!

Edit: And In terms of Removal reports, in Ingress the removal range is already unlimited. In Pokemon Go, it is 80 metres.
