My coworker and I have been getting back into pokemon go after both taking a long break. We have nominated some cool stuff in a nearby shopping plaza and downtown area. We noticed how there is a lot of stops clustered here but no gym yet. Was just curious about why there wasn’t a gym yet and if there is a way to get a gym in this area here???

Based on the co-ordinates you posted, this is what I found.
As I don’t have local knowledge, I can’t determine what is Pokestops and Gyms and what are not. You may want to familiarise yourself with the article from PokemonGoHub which is based on user / community sourced information on what we believe to fall into inclusion criteria and what qualifies as Gyms and Pokestops. Without seeing what is in your area, it’s not something we can guess accurately as to why you have a lot of Pokestops and why the gyms are not showing in the immediate area where you are.

Gyms adhere to L14 cells, while Pokestops adhere to L17 cells.
There is no real way to guarantee that a specific stop will become a gym, as it is chosen at random from all the stops in a L14 cell that is not a showcase stop. (You used to be able to ‘like’ a wayspot to make it more likely to become a gym, but that was abused so they removed it)
My guess is that the gyms of your cell are on the edges of the cell. If you can find 3 gyms that are contained in your L14 cell, then unfortunately there is no way to make a new gym as the cell is at max capacity for gyms. I can see the 2 red gyms in your picture, both of which appear to be in your L14 cell, and the density of wayspots that was shared by P1dg3ySlayer makes me believe that there may now be 3 gyms from your nominations, but the most recent one probably was chosen outside of your immediate play area.
However, if you DONT see 3 gyms, then there is still a slot, and getting 20 or more pokestops in your L14 cell will roll the dice and you could have yourself a fancy shmancy new gym!
