Scopely and future of Wayfarer

And Peridot’s

Lightship is stil a Niantic product though? No reason why the owner wouldn’t still use that database for POIs. And I think Niantic understand how important Ingress is to adding wayspots.

Still a bit odd to move Wayfarer across to the new owner though.

Fair enough.

We don’t know what was agreed behind the scenes in terms of what Scopely and Niantic will do with other once the split takes place.

The PoGO gameboard is driven by Wayfarer, the two are intrinsically linked. I’m not sure that you couldn’t take one without the other without fundamentally changing the way that the PoGO gameboard functions.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this affects the Ingress gameboard, the Ingress team has always been far more selective on allowing things from other projects onto their gameboard coughfoursquarecough so I’d imagine if Scopely makes any significant changes to the Wayfarer criteria or process they’ll have to make decisions on how they process those Wayspots.

Pogo isn’t driven by Wayfarer. Wayfarer is just an interface to a Database of POI’s that is accessed by multiple products such as Pokemon Go, Ingress and Pikmin Bloom.

I have so many thoughts on this, from the perspective of an Ingress player, a Pokémon GO player, Wayfarer, Wayfarer Ambassador and even as an occasional Peridot player.

My thoughts

you’ll have to listen to episode 86 of the Ingress Insights podcast on Sunday, available wherever you find good podcasts

Soooo another podcast I can ig…listen to… :grimacing: :face_with_tears_of_joy:

You weren’t listening already?

:broken_heart:

Just thinking out loud. If Ingress is going to be a seperate database to Scopely games, I can’t see myself wanting to nominate the same stuff twice to be honest. It will be a shame if there is a seperation between what Ingress and the other games can see.

I didn’t know it existed until now.

Note to self, do more promotions of it

I can see how Peridot could use geosplats on places that aren’t Wayspots, but I don’t see how you could have Ingress without Wayspots / portals. I guess after the Lightship database is sold, Niantic will pay a fee to use the Wayspots in Ingress?

Will Ingress agents still be able to nominate?
Will PokemonGo trainers be able to submit scans?

I guess the new guys (Scopely) will rebrand https://wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/, maintain the site, process appeals and help desk requests, and make criteria clarifications?

Wait… we can self promote?

Is Lightship also being sold?

I think, in selling Wayfarer, that means the Wayspot database, and software to add and change Wayspots. And maintenance thereof.

However I think Niantic keep Niantic Spatial, which was Niantic Lightship, being the overall map database that the games pull from.

I had assumed it would be the Wayfarer platform but not the ownership of the underlying data ie lightship would remain with Niantic

I know Niantic is making Niantic Spatial Inc which Scopely is investing into as well so I assumed Lightship was staying put and there’d maybe be a data license agreement or something like that?

I mean do we really need a divorce to have a good old fashioned pillow fight? :joy:

With the new geosplatting, you can take a splat anywhere - even if not a Wayspot. So I can picture a spacial database of scans without Wayspots. But not how that would work for Ingress, which needs portals.
