Description:
The Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway is a 16 mile stretch of new waterway proposed between Bedford and Milton Keynes. The first stage of the project is at this eastern end, connecting the River Great Ouse to land to the south of Wootton. This sign marks the boundary of the park, just outside the settlement of Gibraltar.

The submission lacks uniqueness or historical and cultural meaning
Rejected on appeal because “The nomination in question does not meet the Wayfarer criteria as it is commonly found direction sign that are mass produced”, although the appeal had a less-cropped photo with more of the pedestrian/cycleway sign visible at the top.
The BMK Waterway Park is in the early stages of development, these signs mark the boundary. I believe there are about four pairs of signs at the moment. They look “mass produced” because highway signs have to meet certain standards in terms of construction else they are not allowed. There are several other information signs in the two towns about the proposed waterway which are wayspots, but this is the first marking out of the development.
I think these are of interest to explorers who may wonder what they are for, there’s not a huge number of them. I think these are potentially eligible, but should I just give up?
You can try. Whats important about the trail is the trail itself need to be unique. The marker doesnt need to be fancy or artistic but sadly sometimes its hard to pass reviewer. Repeater are most likely rejected for being indistinct though. You can try appeal or getting more supporting information about your nomination.
I think this sounds interesting but I think it needs some clarity as to what it is.
Title :
East of Gibraltar sounds too vague and depending on zoom level Gibraltar doesn’t always appear as a name. So if possible something more focussed?
The description has words like “new” “ proposed” “first stage”. They all throw doubt on its permanence. Then it talks of the waterway but not about a footpath along side of it.
So you need to put forward a case that this waterway has been created as a linear park / green space to provide a great space - routes and paths for walking. That is what is important.
You say the signs are acting as boundary markers? If they mark entrances or access points that would be good.
I feel there is something interesting here but not quite sure exactly what it is.
Yes, it’s a boundary marker. The park is a linear one, the route is perpendicular to the footpath (i.e. it goes underneath). So far there are minimal tangible things built, but these signs are permanent and put up with permission from the council. The land is already allocated to the park.
The nearest settlement is called Gibraltar but you are right, that’s not obvious on all maps. I tried naming it after the road and that was rejected too.
As far as I know, there are four pairs of signs at present only..
My two cents worth on this - the idea is bonkers but it’s been gaining momentum for years. Canals are not exactly modern infrastructure, but effectively this is what they are building. Apart from all the other engineering issues, there’s a fair sized hill they need to get over.. Bedford & Milton Keynes Waterway Trust - Wikipedia
On the plus side, if this thing ever gets finished (at an estimated cost of £170 million) it should give some good wayspots..
