Bug Reports should include the following and any additional information you feel is necessary to aid in the investigation of the bug.
Description of the issue : If you zoom in on Google Maps, the map does not load like before. It’s the same on the Pokemon Go app stop request menu, and it’s the same on the wayfarer review site. What’s the problem recently? The same problem occurs on iPad and Android phones. I don’t think it’s a problem with the device or browser, but what’s the problem recently?
Hi! I’m assuming you would like to see the Google satellite map? Is the button on the top right of the map window that would allow this switch not working?
In my hands the satellite map still loads well, so it doesn’t seem to be a Wayfarer-wide problem.
It is unlikely the team will be able to reproduce the issue to support you when the screenshots you show are using so many plug-ins that modify the map and the map layers. Could you please start by disabling Tampermonkey (or whatever other script manager you use) and trying to use the map switch button on your review page without plugins, and posting a new screenshot?
Could you also please share on which specific device and browser this is?
The device in the picture is iPad Air4, and it’s a Safari browser. I also deleted tampermonkey thinking it was a plug-in issue, but nothing has changed. This issue is caused by the phrase “sorry no image” if you keep zooming in on the satellite map. I tested 3 devices on Android smartphone, MacBook, and iPad without installing any plug-ins with a recognized browser like Chrome and Safari, and initially there’s no problem, but when I zoom in on the satellite map, the map doesn’t load in the end.
This problem happens the same when I install PocketStop on the Pokemon Go app. And the important thing is that only if I zoom in on the map of South Korea. So this won’t happen when I zoom in on the map of other countries.
OK, thank you for your answer and for reporting back, something seems to be off with South Korea indeed.
I could offer the hypothesis that this is somehow related to the mapping restrictions the government of South Korea puts in place? That would track with Pokémon GO also having issues, if you are talking about the nomination interface.
I have no idea if anything can be done at the level of the team (@NianticAaron can you please check if this can be at least alleviated? I am able to look at this region on satellite on regular Google Maps), but in the meantime I see you already have the best possible community workaround, which is using a community plugin that helps open in Naver. It’s not as convenient but it works
edit: I have retitled your report so that we can find it more easily.
Hi and welcome to the forum! There does indeed seem to be an ongoing issue specifically with South Korea satellite. I will merge your post into a different topic reporting the same issue, so that they can all be found in one place.
I’m thinking if it has got something to do with the Map data in South Korea? The higher the number elements that need to be loaded, the longer it takes usually. Again, this is just an opinion at the moment nd not substantiated by any means whatsoever.
I’m escalating this issue to ensure that it gets looked at by the relevant person(s). In the meanwhile can you confirm if Google Maps are loading normally?
Currently in Korea, I heard that Google has blocked all Korea’s ip, so high definition satellite maps are not accessible in Korea. Actually, if I use vpn, the map loads everywhere without any problems. However, when I nominate the stop on the Pokemon Go app, if I use vpn, I have a lot of difficulties being a reason for the violation of the rules. The fundamental problem is Google’s decision to block the ip. So I want to know if Niantic and Google can be contacted to solve this issue.
South Korea has strict laws that state that providers must create digital maps in partnership with map makers located in South Korea. As such, foreign mapping services like Google are not permitted unless they partner with local providers approved by the South Korean government.
The South Korean government considers its digital map data a matter of national security and it closely monitors the digital maps made by companies within its borders much like the US government does with Google.
This unfortunately isn’t a scenario where Niantic can negotiate with Google directly to fix the problem, but they would likely be forced to negotiate with a company in South Korea to get accurate map data. Even then, I’m not sure how integrating another 3rd party mapping system into their review UI would work, or even be feasible.
Either way, unfortunately, this isn’t something Niantic can fix on their own.
저의 심사대상의 대부분은 위성사진이 보이지 않습니다.
그렇기에 이 심사대상 전부를 위치를 알수 없습니다 항목에 체크하게 된다면 신뢰도 하락이 걱정됩니다.
Most of my audit objects don’t use satellite imagery.
Therefore, if you check the “I don’t know the location of all of these audit objects”, I am worried about the loss of credibility.
Using a translator, the wording can be weird.
Hi, welcome! From the language you appear to be based in South Korea (sorry if I’m making an incorrect assumption). There is a known specific issue affecting embedded satellite view in Niantic products for users in South Korea attempting to interact with the South Korean map. For now your best solution is to use workarounds or to use satellite on the dedicated Google maps page. I will merge your post into that thread.
