Had an appeal rejected for what I consider a unusual unique shop. If a shop selling fair trade items made by local artists and artisans is considered a generic business, then what isn’t?
They won an award. Rated 4.9 on trip adviser. To me, this is not a generic business.
This is one of those nominations where it may come down to having excellent supporting information. It can definitely pass as an unusual shop.
When you resubmit it, don’t cite the criteria in your supporting info. It’s not helpful: reviewers know what the criteria are. Also don’t compare this to other shops. Again it’s not helpful.
You do well pointing out describing the unusual things they sell. Keep that. IMO, what will push this into being accepted is if you back up your statements with proof. Point to the shop’s website. Find any news articles or publications that mention this as a unique and interesting place. It showcases Cabo Verdean culture, so perhaps you can find a travel or tourism related story about it.
I think I found their Instagram page which may also be worth including as support:
I would include the Trip Adviser page and point out they won the 2025 Travelers’ Choice award there. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g482848-d7110471-Reviews-Djunta_Mo_Art-Santa_Maria_Ilha_do_Sal.html
I can’t find any local media coverage but I haven’t tried too hard to look. This one is worth going that extra mile for in giving it all the support you can.
These are great links thank you! Unfortunately I won’t be able to resubmit tho ![]()
How would I point out what makes this shop unique without saying what makes it stand apart from other shops in the area?
That’s a shame that you won’t be able to resubmit. I think this has great potential to be a wayspot. I like it.
I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying. Telling and showing how your nomination is unique is good.
”…Most other souvenirs shops here sell imported, mass produced…” is the type of comparison I think is unhelpful. In my mind if this was my submission, I don’t care about the other business mine is unique because …. and then show why.
I would have voted for this if I had had the opportunity to do so.
Why can’t you resubmit?
I think the appeal decision was incorrect. It sounds like a good place to explore and has huge value to the community.
I successfully nominated a similar kind of community focussed store before, but luckily it was accepted by reviewers and I didnt need to appeal. I think your place is just as eligible.
Probably the 10km limit to submissions.
Oh. So I can’t take photos far away on hikes and then submit at home? Good to know. So I will continue to upload while risking my life - either by standing on steep climbs or by the walking sticks or backpacks of angry co-hikers ![]()

You can choose upload later if submitting within game - no distance limit for the upload. This can help ensure you have a good signal strength or wi-fi and is less of an interruption to a walk. Just remember to do this as soon as possible as the clock for when it can get auto checked and enter voting starts ticking from the time you created it.
I get home, upload went a few minutes then go to contributions page to place them all on hold to check and edit text.
The distance limit is a pain point.
I sometimes have to organise going to a place that brings me to within the distance, find a coffee shop and sit and submit. Or a few weeks ago I had to walk to get within range and submit as I was just over the 10km limit.
Thanks, i hope i will be able to upload on site to avoid these issues.
It is always easier after the event when several people help and look at something to find the lines of evidence that will help an original submission or an appeal.
The links posted by @jojenreed64 I think are particularly helpful as they provide evidence to back up what you say. That is always going to be vital where you are proposing something that is not going to be clear to all how it might be eligible. I know I have done this a few times ( you would think you would learn after the first time
) and its only been when I have done a fresh redraft that I realise what was missing.
I like these sorts of places with ethical trading at their heart. They often have strong ties to the local community too so its not just about selling goods.
A good method is as @elijustrying said.
Submit on site using Upload Later with placeholder title, placeholder text and placeholder supporting text, as this is the fastest way to do it and limit the time spent staring at your phone.
When you get back to wifi the same day, upload them and put them on hold. You get approximately 24 hours from the initial Upload Later before submissions will go into the queue, so as long as you complete the upload that day, you have time to put them on hold and then edit the text.
You still need /some/ signal (which is a little frustrating), so if there is no signal at all, you have to take the photos, wait until you have some signal and then do the above (which takes a little longer as you have to spend longer finding the location).
I was on vacation there and have returned home
”…Most other souvenirs shops here sell imported, mass produced…” is the type of comparison I think is unhelpful. In my mind if this was my submission, I don’t care about the other business mine is unique because …. and then show why.
As someone who used to review, I disagree with this. My first thought when seeing the description above was, “That sounds like it’s describing a souvenir store” and my second thought was, “Do all the other souvenir stores also carry the same items?”. I wouldn’t have automatically assumed that anything mentioned in the description isn’t something available in other stores, as it’s absolutely possible for people to sell their crafts through more than one outlet. So, the comparison to other souvenir stores would indeed have helped to convince me of this store’s uniqueness, because it would’ve answered both my questions.
