Wayspot Removal Appeal: Penang Turf Club Welcome Sign

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: Penang Turf Club Welcome Sign

  • Location (lat/lon): (5.4144356, 100.3019152)

  • City: Georgetown, Penang

  • Country: Malaysia

  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email (do not include your personal information):

  • Additional Information (if any): This wayspot is located at a very busy cross junction. It is very hard and unsafe to access this wayspot as there isn’t really much pavement space on any side of the roads. It would be very unsafe for people to come here to play the game, let alone a group of players gathering.

Welcome to the forum @SW77

You have shown that it cannot be approached safely from the main street side. For the team to remove this, I think you will need to show that it cannot be approached safely from the Club side either.

Thanks for the suggestions!

The welcome sign is located in its own secluded area fenced off from both the main roads and the club ( as shown in these additional images below) So people from inside the club can’t access it either. They wouldn’t even be able to see it as it’s blocked off by a physical wall and hedge.

I don’t think this should/will be removed for being dangerous.

I would say it lacks pedestrian access from outside the club, but as @cyndiepooh mentioned, the OP needs also to show that it lacks pedestrian access from within the club, where the red arrow indicates on the photo. It’s just not clear either way.

The removal reason is “no safe pedestrian access” not “no pedestrian access” afaik. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I see. Those are all valid reasons.

Unfortunately, I’m not a member of the club so I’m not able to provide any details or images about how to get to that location from inside the club. The entrance marked on the map here is gated and has a private property sign displayed, so I wouldn’t be able to get in either.

I’m not too sure about this, but if the gate for the path leading to the wayspot is marked with a private property sign, would it still be considered suitable for pedestrian access?

I’ve actually asked people from my community about this. They said that those paths and the building you see near the wayspot are actually used by only workers and gardeners for maintaining the field, hence the “no trespassing sign”.

Visitors of Penang Turf Club actually enter the turf club from the other side of the field (detailed in the map below). Additionally, visitors can only view horse racings from the main building there and are not authorised to go to the corner of the field where the wayspot is located. Only horse racers can use the entirety of the race track.

Of course, this is just from word of mouth and I unfortunately do not have physical evidence to back this up, but this does make sense to me.

If a site lacks pedestrian access it by definition lacks safe pedestrian access, but nonetheless pedestrian access is a acceptance criterion.

Thanks for the appeal, Explorer. We looked at this Wayspot again and decided that it does not meet our criteria for removal at this time. Having said that, we have moved it to the correct location.

I see.

So the “private property, no trespassing” sign isn’t enough to prove pedestrians can’t go in to that path?

While we understand your disappointment about the location of this Wayspot, based on our research, it does not require any adjustments at this time.

If you’re not certain you have the right to access a location or are not certain it is safe to access, please do not make any attempts to do so. As a player or any other member of the community, you must respect access restrictions, never trespass, or in any manner gain or attempt to gain access to any property or location where you do not have the right or permission to be. Please review and follow the player Guidelines at all times while playing our games to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone!

The only “private property” restriction for Niantic is SFPRP - they make this clear in the tool tip for “Appropriate”
