Wayspot Removal Appeal: United Hokkien Cemeteries

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: United Hokkien Cemeteries

  • Location (lat/lon): (5.4130697, 100.2950404)

  • City: Georgetown, Penang

  • Country: Malaysia

  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email (do not include your personal information):

  • Additional Information (if any): This is a cemetery ground and funeral parlour where families and friends come to mourn the passing of their loved ones. Players gathering here to play have been seen as disrespectful and are also taking up car parking space for people actually visiting the cemetery. Additionally, Niantic guidelines have specifically said that cemeteries are considered sensitive locations and shouldn’t be accepted as Wayspots. I hope this can be removed swiftly to prevent further inconveniences to local community.

As you can see from these images, the place name signs all indicate that it is a funeral parlour and cemetery.

Thanks for the appeal, @Shuyi0724. We took another look at the Wayspot in question and decided that it does not meet our criteria for removal at this time.

Hi NianticAtlas,

Thank you for the reply. However, I can’t seem to understand why this Wayspot can’t be removed.

First, it is a cemetery ground and funeral parlour which already violates Niantic’s Wayspot criteria as cemeteries are considered “sensitive location”

Secondly, there aren’t any gravestones associated with significant/historical figures here. It is a common cemetery place that can be found throughout Penang.

Thirdly, it has been very disrespectful to have players gather outside the funeral parlour when people are mourning their loved ones. Additionally, I know this is irrelevant to Wayfarer but this Wayspot being a Gym in Pokemon Go only further worsens the problem.

I fully wish you could reconsider your decision

Thank you

When Niantic refuses a report like this, I contact the management of the property to let them know the Wayspot exists and let them know they can have it removed or restricted if they so wish. Niantic will honor property owner requests with proper credentials.

I see, thanks for letting me know.

That’s pretty frustrating as I’ve just seen in the forum that Niantic removed a Wayspot located at a cemetery in Taiwan swiftly.

I would have thought that this Wayspot being a cemetery would be dealt with in a similar manner.

Also, I don’t mean to offend anybody, but what is the point of giving me the option to report a Wayspot as a “sensitive location” in game when in the end it still gets rejected. And, I need to resort to contacting a property owner who may just ignore my emails. :frowning:

This place being a crematory and a funeral parlor means that it would be frequently visited by families that recently lost their loved ones. In my opinion, this adds to the sensitivity around this location being a Wayspot.

That’s so true. This isn’t just a cemetery, but a funeral parlour and crematorium. People who visit this place just recently had a loss. Please @NianticAtlas could you please reconsider your decision.

Thank you

Since you have had a decision, if you wish to comment further it will take time. But it would be best if you had a fresh look at what you provided and see if you can provide something else for your case.

Public cemeteries should comply with Niantic’s wayspot standards. However, the “Cemetery wayspots in Taiwan were quickly removed” you mentioned are actually private cemeteries.

It makes no difference to Niantic policy whether is cemetery is public or private.

Public or private cemeteries without historic significance should never have been accepted as a Wayspot in the first place as per Niantic Wayspot eligibility guidelines. That is why I reported this Wayspot

Whether you agree with this statement or not, this is the most important difference between the two cases.

Your question is very typical in the current situation. The nomination criteria don’t align with the removal criteria. This has already had a lot of debate.

The nomination criteria reject sensitive locations, but the removal criteria don’t.
The sensitive locations shouldn’t be nominated in the first place, but can still get approved for some reasons like grandpa nomination, negligent reviewer, etc.

Once it gets approved, you have no chance to remove it.

The option to report for removal for “Sensitive location” has recently been added to PoGo but not to Ingress (yet?)

Thanks for letting me know. I haven’t reached 38 to be able to click the report option in Pokemon. In Ingress, any level can report the invalid portals.

Agree about it still being VERY frustrating that you can’t report something that never should have been accepted for just not meeting criteria, but wanted to let you know that sensitive option had been added, at least to PoGo.

But it seems Niantic hasn’t adopted this new criterion or they didn’t honor it based on the decision they made in this post.
