Wrongful Gym Removal // Restoration Appeal

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: Cochenour Memorial Stone & Plaque

  • Location (lat/lon): 40.494405985696254, -79.86818756965909

  • City: Pittsburgh

  • Country: United States of America

  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email (do not include your personal information):

  • Additional Information (if any): I recently submitted a nomination for a memorial site at the above coordinates with the above title, in which it was accepted. For about a week or so, it was in Pokemon Go as a Gym (since there are no other gyms within a large distance), but out of nowhere, it was fully removed from the game. The Wayspot also currently no longer exists. The weird thing is that seemingly overnight, a different Pokestop appeared nearby (not within the same cell to my knowledge), but the Gym was removed. Could this be looked into on this forum, because it’s unfortunate that it got removed. If more information is needed about the Wayspot, I would love to provide more information.
    Thank you so much.

Memorials need to be for a significant figure in order to be eligible. A quick Google search for this person doesn’t bring up any results that seemingly match this memorial, and therefore no information about how they are a significant figure. That may be why it was removed.

I could readily understand this as a rejection reason, but I thought the removal required a much higher bar (i.e.: false location/fake object, hazardous, SFPRP, K-12 school).

If failing to adequately meet the acceptance requirements is sufficient for removal, we are going to have to brace for an onslaught.

This is a memorial stone and sign, correct? Not a sensitive location.

With it being a recent acceptance, maybe it was audited after it got accepted?

To add a bit of context as to who Steven H. Cochenaur is, he used to be an Organics Manager who did a lot of environmental work concerning preservation. In terms of environmental studies, he has done a lot. But as for the site - it is a memorial stone and sign. And I can confirm that it is not in a sensitive location (easy to reach for anyone)!

Also, what does it mean for it to be audited after being accepted?

Niantic has recently implemented a Machine Learning (ML) tool to review nominations in addition to player reviews. I suspect that Niantic may be reviewing judgements made by ML - auditing its work. If the find one that it got ‘wrong’ they overturn the decision.

It could also be that the property owner/management asked for it to be removed.

Niantic has increased the scope of removal criteria. Sensitive locations/cemetery (grave stones) have always been part of the removal criteria.

With all due respect, I’m still a bit confused as to why it got removed since I got permission to add it to the game from the landowners, and the location the memorial site is on is not a cemetery (the memorial is not considered a gravestone).

Landowners cannot grant permission that bypass rules and policies.

This Wayspot was removed because there is another Wayspot connected to the same object.

It isn’t a grave at all. Which rule/policy says a memorial stone and sign are disallowed?

i merely commented on a specific statement… im not invested in the rest of the conversation to comment on any of that yet

Thank you for your response. But would it be possible at this point to replace the Wayspot that is connected to the same object to the Wayspot that got removed? Thank you.
