Wayspot Submission was not "Distinct" when there is only one of this sign

Hey All.

Was disappointed this stop did not get approved. There is an entrance sign to a neighborhood which is really unique and distinct. There is only one of them. The art/design stands out and is easy to spot. Any thoughts on this one? Thought I had a good one here.

Appeal Ruling:

Niantic Note

Thanks for the appeal, Wayfinder! The nomination in question does not meet the Wayfarer criteria because this neighborhood sign appears nondistinct. If this assessment is not accurate, please resubmit the nomination with additional context. We recommend you review the Wayspot Criteria and Forum Criteria Discussions Library sections before submitting your next Wayspot contribution: Niantic Technical Support and Help Center and https://niantic.helpshift.com/hc/en62-wayfarer/faq/66266-forum-criteria-discussions-library/

Reviewers provided these top reasons for not accepting this submission:
  • The submission lacks uniqueness or historical and cultural meaning

Screenshot of Sumission:

Reviewers were attempting to tell you that there is nothing significant about this sign. Appeals reviewers upheld that. I agree with these decisions, as I do not see anything about this sign or signs like them that promote exercise, exploration, or being social.

Thank you so much for sharing this appeal decision statement.

I agree with you that calling this “indistinct” goes against common sense. I wish we were able to simply reject for simply not meeting criteria, but they removed that option in the current review flow. I hope they bring it back.

This is clearly an advert for the business of renting apartments.

The company is called Redwood apartments. It uses the company logo.

Redwood in this context is a registered trademark.

Not to sound dumb, but a registered trademark does not appear on the guidelines of what is not allowed. There are several stops in the area with trademarked logos that have been accepted. I want to make sure I understand what point you are making or maybe I am misunderstanding? It is the sign for a neighborhood with homes and not apartments. The design of the sign I thought was unique and a great marker. But obviously my opinion on what I think is not a determining factor.

I believe it was rejected because it was considered “nothing significant” as stated in the previous comment. Appreciate the comment. Which helps with future submissions. I always thought the sign was a unique marker for an area with a lot of routes. Its easy to identify when meeting up. Hence why I tried to enter it. Getting spots accepted has been tough lately. I have had a few accepted and feeling a little defeated on trying with the multiple rejects recently. Hence the post. What I think meets a requirement may not be valid.

I recommend you put aside any thought of Pogo routes when considering whether a wayspot is eligible. Routes can be created between any two pokestops (or indeed between one pokestop and itself) and are purely a Pogo concept that has nothing to do with wayfarer.

Registered Trademarks won’t be a listed exclusion, but it reduces the value of the art and is likely to make reviewers feel is not valuable as a POI. Locally, lots of shop shutters have got murals. Where the mural looks simply like an advert for the shop, it is unlikely to be accepted as a wayspot. Where it is art in its own right, it gets accepted.

Please have a look at these for understanding what makes a good wayspot.

I thought the design was art. A logo is artwork. I do logo design as a hobby, so maybe I am biased. I have read the posted links several times. Always paranoid to get it wrong. What is seen as art can be different to everyone.

But I understand. It is not “Art” in the traditional sense. Thanks for your response.

Think of it this way.

Without the housing there would people go to visit this to look at the Art?

There’s lots of opinions about art

What matters for Wayfarer, as far as art is concerned, is Exploration. Is this something that people would be interested to find?

It doesn’t have to be that most people would be interested to find it, but generally it helps if most people can see that at least some people would be interested to find it.

For example, this - while not being art - is something that most people wouldn’t care about or notice, but it’s something that most reviewers could see would be something that some pepole would want to find it.

I hope that makes sense.

What you need to think like is the average reviewer - what would they accept and how to best present it. There are obviously submissions which the average reviewer will incorrectly reject, which is why there are appeals, but it’s a good place to start thinking.

The registered trade marks is something companies use.
True neighbourhoods/communities don’t have that association.
It also was the plural neighbourhoods - again not a way to refer to a single community.
Those are the features I picked out when looking at the object.

It is very discouraging when you get hit with a sequence of rejections, I’m sure we all have had that sinking feeling.
We put forward nominations believing they are ok. You wouldn’t submit unless you believed in it. So it is hard to take that you might have been wrong. I am sitting on 2 recent rejections. Other people didn’t like them so I have to stop and look at them from their perspective. What do I need to change, are they fundamentally not suitable, can they be good enough or to leave them be.

If you would like the community to help to look at other rejections and perhaps look around the area to see if they can spot things they will be happy to do so.
If it is one of the USA residential areas, then often there is very little as they are private residential property and very little else.
