A duplicate submission merged with an existing Pokéstop?

St. John’s Information Board

An informational sign located in the front garden of the church. As well as opening times and contact information, it also lets readers know that everyone is welcome at the church.

The sign is viewable on the public path, and easy to read.

Hello, I recently submitted an information board outside a local church, but it got declined as a duplicate, but what has confused me is that the photo got merged with the Pokéstop that exists nearby. I wasn’t aware that could happen. I was going to appeal it, since it’s not a duplicate, but now I’m not sure what I should do. Below is a photo of the location showing that it’s not a duplicate, as well as the photo that was merged with an existing Pokéstop.

This is an appropriate duplication. The sign is only eligible as a proxy for the church. But the church already has a wayspot. Remember, each wayspot must be a great place to be social, exercise, or explore. The sign does none of those things on its own.

This exact situation is stated in help

Should the sign for a Wayspot nomination be marked as a duplicate if there is already a Wayspot for the object the sign represents?

If the sign is a significant distance from the object then it should be considered on its own. If it is close, such as with a church sign and a nearby church building, then it should be marked as a duplicate.

Right, I was not aware of that. Would stuff inside the church still be eligible such as stained glass art? I recently saw posts on reddit of someone getting stained glass artwork in a church accepted, but I never really know the rules about indoor Pokéstops like that.

Yes, if they are interesting in their own right.

It is hard to draw the line as to where a stained glass work starts becoming a work of art and stops being just a window, which would be infrastructure for the church, and would not be eligible separately. The more you can find out about each piece, the more likely it is to be accepted.

Here is a general clarification on unique art:

Thank you, this is very helpful. Would plaques inside or around the church also count as the same POI?

It would depend on the individual plaque, and how interesting it is in itself. Sometimes dedication plaques, for example, are interesting historically. It is always hard to make a blanket statement.

Gotcha. Sorry can I just ask then, has it always been a thing that a duplicate submission has its photo added to the original? I’ve never seen that before.

Yes. That is a great way to figure out what your nomination was marked duplicate of if you can see the Wayspot in the game you play. We used to be able to check Ingress for the duplicate photos there, but now Ingress is separate from Wayfarer.

It makes sense that you wouldn’t have seen this before because you would not normally submit something that was a duplicate. It usually happens when the duplicate Wayspot is not showing in Pokemon Go.

Hi,
Just add a few thoughts from a fellow U.K. a wayfinder.

The boards simply stating the church details like your submission are proxy’s for the church.
It is quite common in the UK to also have a noticeboard for the church - community notices, up and coming events - basically like a normal community notice board and those can be considered like any other noticeboard. Difficultly arises when the 2 are combined which sometimes happens.

You are likely to have difficulty with stained glass unless you can demonstrate it’s specific value in its own right - as things like that don’t fare well in the U.K. as they are often regarded as an integral part of the church. Check if the church is listed and any specific parts that might be picked out as special.
A specific plaque inside is more likely to do well. For example there is often one that acts as a war memorial.
Are there any foundation stones they work well.

I see that at the rear of the church there are parish rooms - if these are used for meetings of groups etc then this could be nominated. But if it just an admin space then no.
I see reference to a parish hall and there is a different building at the back is that the hall? A parish hall where groups meet would be good.
There is also the potential to submit the bowling green itself as opposed to the club house as that is the field of play, compared to the club.

I’ve also marked up the Portobello Buddhist Priory which is at 27 Brighton place. There is no sign on streetview so without a sign this would be tricky, but there is a website.

I’ll just go for the Green then, since that would be in the same cell as the sign I was submitting. There is also an empty cell behind the church, and this is there. You said Parishes are good to go in?

I meant to post this previouslyb

The green and the parish rooms are in the same cell.
If you want to submit more some of these would also have the potential to be powerspots.
