Now that the Wayfarer criteria have been updated and trail markers are explicitly eligible again (Trails & Markers), I would like for all the countless trail markers that have been removed in my area to be restored. I created a thread about it (So are trail markers eligible again or not?) from which I concluded from my conversation with @NianticAaron that all of these types of trail markers are eligible. I have also already appealed a few of them in the Wayfarer contributions page and all of them were accepted, so I am confident that all of the appeals I will be posting in this topic will also be accepted.

So without further ado, let’s get into the list. I will not be listing the city and country for each one, since they are all the same.

And lastly, we have the trail markers for the Veilig Verkeer Nederland (VVN) Verkeersexamenroute (https://examen.vvn.nl/): a cycling route designed by the Dutch traffic safety authority for teaching traffic safety to children. Virtually every Dutch city has one of these routes, since teaching children traffic safety while cycling is very important in a country with such a major bicycle culture as the Netherlands. These routes are often used by both schools and parents to teach their children, while also being a nice route to follow for tourists. This route is mapped out using these signs:

Their AI is going on a rampage removing many eligible and legitimate wayspots. Their AI is very flawed and needs a lot of work still.

Machine Learning (ML) used by Niantic does not remove waypoints. To the best of my knowledge it only accepts Waypoints and Edit suggestions.

It is indeed also being used for those purposes, but trust me I know for a 100% it also plays a part in removing valid wayspots. It’s good they use it to filter out coal while people submit coal, but to remove valid wayspots on mass scale especially in the Netherlands is just absurd tbh.

I very much doubt this. Most trail markers are automatically approved by Emily. The removals were very likely to have been manual as a result.

Yep, there were some local Ingress players who were very eager to remove as many portals from the other team’s play areas as possible.

You mean that they get accepted right/24hrs after nominating by the AI? How come that almost half of my manual reviews that I do I come across trail markers? If they would be accepted by the AI, I wouldn’t encounter them en masse right?

I did say “most” and not “all”. Emily seems to be able to recognise a decent amount of trail markers and will approve those that she can successfully identify. Some of them she doesn’t seem to be able to easily recognise though, and those get through into regular reviews.

So, @NianticAaron , I have here a quote from you saying that all these trail markers were removed before the recent criteria adjustments. That is true.

But then why are they STILL being removed to this very day? WEEKS after the criteria have changed and these portals have become eligible again? Is it simply a report backlog issue? If so, isn’t it about time someone dives into that backlog and pulls these trail markers out?

When do they get accepted? Do they get accepted right after nominating? Or does it take like 24hrs? I know from some community members before it used to take 24hrs to get a nomination (usually) cool rejected by the AI

All the ones I’ve had accepted by Emily (which is all but one of them since she started being able to accept nominations and not just reject them) were within 24 hours of submission. The one that wasn’t picked up by her is currently being voted on by the community.

We have restored the markers that we could verify that exist at the location and are part of an official named trail. For others, if they are part of an official named trail, I suggest that you resubmit the nominations.

I still don’t understand why you’re so hell-bent on trails requiring names though. I’m going to quote directly from the recent criteria clarification regarding trail markers here:

“Although no specific name is provided on the marker above, it is official, permanent, and unique.”

This quote is next to a picture of a sign and two thumbs-up emojis. Clearly being part of a “named trail” is not a requirement in the slightest. It seems to me that all that’s required is for the markers to be official (which mine are), permanent (which mine are) and unique. My markers aren’t unique per se, but their locations are. And to quote the criteria clarification page again:

“Although these are mass produced, they are official and at a decision point. The object and its function are unique.”

This quote is next to another picture of two simple arrow signs and a thumbs-up emoji.

So really, the only requirements for trail markers are being official and being permanent. And all of the markers I posted in my original post fulfill these criteria. So hopefully you will reconsider and restore a lot more of them.

Furthermore, I would like to encourage you to read these Wikipedia articles (Numbered-node cycle network - Wikipedia) (Cycling in the Netherlands - Wikipedia) to improve your understanding of Dutch and Belgian cycling culture, its infrastructure and its importance. I feel that you’re looking at these trail markers through star-spangled red-white-and-blue-tinted glasses and it’s affecting your judgement.

I read the entire criteria clarification front to back again and nowhere does it state that the trail having a name is a requirement. It’s a plus if it does, but not having one doesn’t make the trail and its markers ineligible.

And you can’t tell me with a straight face that this (Numbered-node cycle network - Wikipedia) cycling route network that spans two full countries and parts of three others is not a peak example of exploration.

If it’s the same as a road network but for bikes then it’s just infrastructure sorry. Yes you have enough of them that they’re numbered like roads, but they’re as generic and uninteresting as the few “bike routes” that exist in the US which are also ineligible.

The U.S. signs merely keep cyclists constrained to designated roads with a striped bike lane for (dubious) safety.

The Benelux nodal system allows cyclists to dial-in their own path for whatever purpose (sightseeing, exercise, shopping, commuting, exploring).

The staff seem to be applying standards that do not appear in print. The standards need to be consistent across all the places Niantic suggests we look, so nominators can check the Criteria pages, reviewers can check the tool-tips, admins can look at the CCC, and everyone is happy.

I feel that the OP is making a reasonable request: if a whole lot of legitimate effort was thrown away based on a mistaken viewpoint that was never codified, the onus is on the people who made the mistake to fix it.

We shouldn’t need to re-do all the legwork that Aaron trashed with one click of the mouse.
