Are Animal Shelters Categorically Restricted

I submitted a local animal shelter, and it was rejected almost immediately. I struggled to find the correct “tag” for the type of waypoint, so I was wondering what I should use if I resubmit the nomination, unless animal shelters are generally not allowed? Thanks much!

They are not on any “ineligible” list, but I fail to see how they meet any criteria:

Must meet at least one of the three eligibility criteria

  • A great place for exploration
  • A great place for exercise
  • A great place to be social with others

The categories chosen do not affect the nomination, and submissions from Ingress don’t even include one. And some of those categories are for things that don’t meet eligibility, like elementary schools and fire stations.

I agree that they typically do not meet the criteria for a place to be social at/exercise at/explore. However, there may be things at the shelter that are eligible, such as a dog park, artwork, etc. I know of some shelters that also have cat cafes, which would be eligible.

Keep in mind that the categories are from a third party, not from Niantic, and there are things we can choose that are ineligible. There are also things that are eligible that aren’t even listed, like softball fields and pickleball courts.

Thank you for the quick reply. It’s a bit sad that they don’t meet established criteria, but I understand the point.

Good replies.

Just thought I’d mention… I’d question a “dog park” at an animal shelter, and only pass it if I’m convinced it’s a public place. If it’s only used to exercise sheltered animals, it is not a place to explore or socialize. And exercising dogs wouldn’t count - the exercise criteria means humans.
Along those lines… Same goes for the exercise yard at a veterinarian, for boarded pets or those recovering surgery. Not a place to explore or be social.

Then I dont know how it comes that Wayfarer considers post offices as eligible. They are neither a great place for exploration (typical buildings, barely recognazible) nor a great place for excercise or to be social with others (as they are usually tight spaces where you have to be quiet). Same about all types of universities. Unless you are a student in there, you are not allowed to explore, socialize or excercise in there as stranger, yet most of pokestops in my town are attached to such places. In my oppinion, if a place is public and unique enough compared to other surroundings, it should be considered eligible, including places like animal shalters. Otherwise, considering most of pokestops I have around me, Wayfarer criteria is hypocrirical.

Hello and welcome,

Post offices, in a historical sense, were places where one could go to be social with others in their neighborhood/town. There’s still an aspect of socialization with post offices since it’s where you may go to mail a letter or package to family or friends.

I’m from a small town in a rural area, and the post office there is still somewhat of a social hub. You may go there to mail a letter and chat with others who are doing the same, or with the postal workers as well.

Also, consider opening up a new thread if you have a question that isn’t the same as the thread you are thinking about posting in.

Waypoints don’t need to be accessible to all. As long as the students there can explore, exercise and/or socialize is more than enough. But even then, a lot of campuses are open to more than just students and staff.
