Good evening. Can someone please tell me why a permanent former mailbox used to disregard old, worn United States flags properly would be auto denied. I’ve seen these boxes used as stops all over the United States.
Thank you for your time.

Do you have a picture of the mailbox? I did see an old post on this forum, that indeed many old mailboxes are now auto-reject (https://community.wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/t/are-post-boxes-automatic-rejections-now/11974/8)
I don’t find that these meet the criteria of being a great place to be social/exercise/explore. You just drop off an old US flag to be properly disposed of and not much else. I would reject this for being indistinct, as there are even stores that take back old US flags for proper disposal.
I’ve actually never seen a Wayspot for an US flag disposal site, but there are US post office locations at grocery stores that have Wayspots, and many times the mailboxes are used in the main photos. I think these may be what you’re seeing in-game.
Also, do not post any personal info on the forums. You may want to remove your name from your original post.
Hello,
Thanks for asking so we could explain. It seems intuitive that looking at things that you see on the game map would be a good indicator of things to submit. This is not the case as criteria can change over time, and things that should be rejected are wrongly accepted.
So stick with assessing if it meets current criteria.
This is fundamentally a recycling bin - what it recycles is not relevant.
A recycling place does not meet criteria. It is not place that you would socialise at, explore or exercise.
Actually I rather like this, it’s not just a recycling bin but it’s a special bin for disposing of flags in accordance with the US Flag Code - United States Flag Code - Wikipedia
The photo you supplied isn’t a good one, I don’t know if that was in your submission. Try to get everything straight and have the POI in the center of the picture.
At a stretch it might be something worth exploring, as people may not know how to dispose of flags properly and if they discover this they will be able to do it in a dignified way.
I personally do not believe a flag disposal site meets criteria, not without nice educational signage about the importance of the location or something else helping meet the exploration criteria.
I do find it interesting that there is an Eagle Scout Project plaque on the side. I’d like to be clear that Eagle Scout projects are not inherently eligible and not a Wayfarer Criteria, BUT I do know that Eagle Scout projects are expected to be of community importance. To me, if a project met the bar for the approving board, that does help solidify that it was at least important and interesting to a community. I think it’s possible to use that angle, but I don’t think everyone would agree or interpret it the same way.
Well I learned something today about the disposal of the USA flag, which is interesting.
They’re often at Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, or other similar groups.
Note: Those establishments are almost always eligible as social organizations.
People are allowed to post whatever personal information about themselves that they want to. It may not be a good idea, but adults have the agency to make that decision for themselves.
The box is at a small park in town. The picture doesn’t show the background playground, etc.
Thank you, Gendji.
Gendgi is saying the veterans organization locations are eligible, not the box itself. We have many Wayspots at our VFWs and American Legion posts, but not for a flag disposal box.
Again, an eligible nomination has to either be a great place to be social, a great place to exercise, and/or a great place to explore. This box in my opinion doesn’t meet any of these, as it’s a service to the community to drop off old US flags to be disposed of properly. I doubt anyone is socializing or exercising at this box, and since it’s offering a service that many groups and stores that sell US flags offer, I don’t see it as a great place to explore.
Understood. Thank you as well.
