My nomination was rejected, with the reason being “did not meet criteria”. However, it didn’t say WHICH criteria it didn’t meet. How do I improve the nomination without knowing what was really lacking? Many thanks for your assistance.
We don’t know exactly what the automated process checks for. But we do know that it is a Machine Learning (ML) model and learns from nominations that have been accepted and rejected.
When I get an “automated process” rejection on something that I am sure meets criteria, my first thought is if I can try again with a new photo that makes it clearer what I am submitting. I don’t think that is an issue in this case.
So my second thought is to go back to the three basic criteria of a great place for exercise, exploration, or being social. A recycling center does not seem like a great place for any of these to me. Can you explain how you were thinking it met criteria?
The recycling center is truly a hub for community interaction! It should be as valid as a Town/City Hall as a municipal complex. As witnessed by the flower baskets and landscaping, it is maintained as a beautiful community asset.
I have never interacted with anyone at any of the recycling hubs in my city, as there usually no one around. They typically are just places to drop off your recycling and leave. Yes, some of these sites may have landscaping to make them look nice, but others are just in parking lots near large shopping areas, next to schools, or even next to certain city department buildings, like how we have one next to a police substation/county health/morgue (yes, all 3 are in the same building).
So you’re telling me that people meet up here to socialize? If I wanted to spend time with my friends, I would call them up and say, “Let’s hang out at the recycling center”?
Also, this is just the entrance sign for the recycling center, as it appears to actually be around 44.27111616600425, -73.96706920636264. Here’s the Street View of the sign:
Not the best pedestrian access, IMO.
I was intrigued by the “North Elba Athletic Fields” part of that sign. If these fields haven’t been submitted, you should!
I might try to submit the sign as the entrance to the fields instead of as the entrance to the recyling center. If I did that, I would try a main photo that is closer on the sign, more like this:
but idk about this. the place where the sign is does not look very pedestrian friendly, but it is off the road.
the town site mentions education being a goal, but i don’t see any specifics for education there. if there are classes and programs, then this might be eligible, and you might try and appeal, but just as a place to dispose of stuff, i don’t think it does.
I also see a dog park that appears to be around 44.262624148700944, -73.96052527600693 that may not have a Wayspot yet, as well as the airport. Dog parks are a great place to socialize with other dog owners, and possibly get some exercise in yourself. Airports encourage exploration by taking one to and from different destinations, and may be social hubs, too.
I understand your hesitation, but if any of you have ever been to a VERY RURAL area, the recycling center is truly busy. We often then all go to the Post Office and grocery store on the same circuit. Boonies life. I will check into the athletic fields of course, bit this sign is right between two other waypoints, and would 100% be walkable as a route between the others. For reference, my town has maybe 2500 full-time residents. Thanks for your time
I grew up in a rural area, so I certainly understand. However, I would not consider a place to drop off recycling or grass clippings (which is most common in my hometown) to be a place to socialize/exercise/explore, which all nominations must meet at least one of. You drop off, and then you leave, and that’s even what I do in the city I live in now.
You may want to check out this thread, as it is helpful not just for rural areas, but larger ones, too: Tips for Rural Nominators
“City” being the key term, this community has about 2500 full-time residents. Going recycling is sometimes the highlight of the wek. For real. We rural players really struggle for literally ANYTHING of interest. Pretty signs are the best we can hope for usually.
Not aware of any dog park, but i will certainly look into it.
Everyone knows Everyone here. No kidding
Another place to look at is Lake Placid Horse Shows and each of the arena areas there, as they encourage one to exercise their horses, may be social places to watch horse events, and you may also want to explore said events.
Again, a recycling center, even in a small town, isn’t a great place to be social/exercise/explore. It’s provided by the city/town as a place for one to drop off their recycling, so it’s more of a utility than anything else. It’s similar to a landfill, but not as smelly, but I certainly wouldn’t want to socialize at either places.
And that’s exactly how my hometown is: you know everyone that lives there. Yeah, I could run into someone at the grocery store there that I haven’t seen in awhile, but the grocery store is a generic business, so it doesn’t qualify. The cafe downtown though would be a better place to grab a drink and chat with someone for awhile.
@DTrain2002 I submitted most of the posts at the Horse show ground. Was not aware that each section would be viable as its own post. Will absolutely pursue, thank you
They are sports fields, so each are eligible on their own. More clarification on sports fields can be found here:
Thank you very much! I suppose, not being a “horse person” it never occurred to me as a “sports field” ![]()
Equestrian sports are in the Summer Olympics, so understandable in Lake Placid!
