Barbershops/Salons

I seen a thread about pharmacies and made me think of barber shops after reading comments. Both of these are very social places. Almost all movies show evidence of how women get their gossip at the salon and men is a local hangout in many neighborhoods (movie: barbershop) but these seem to be rejected too.

Summoning @BlameJamal because I know he’s got insights on this exact topic!

The problem I’ve found with salons is all the wimmin standing around gossiping and getting in the way of my picture!

I would definitely accept a barber shop nomination if it looked like it was a locally owned or small regional chain.

I don’t go to the barbers to socialise.

I need my barber to ask how short I want it, I reply with a number, they do their thing in silence, and then later I get up and pay some money.

I’m aware it is different in African American communities and other situations but I wouldn’t think of any of my local ones as meeting Niantic’s acceptance criteria

As with any business, this is going to take some proving that it is a GREAT destination to be social, exercise, or explore. And with generic business as a rejection option, this is going to be a hard sell.

If it is a barbershop or beauty salon with a unique service, I think we can submit it as a target for exploration, focusing on that service. This is common in any country or region.

Honestly this is iconic.

I agree with you about barbershops for sure, but I honestly want to know more about what makes pharmacies social places in your eyes! I’m not being critical. Some people do seem to think this is an obvious place to be social and I don’t really “get” it. Please do tell me more!

Ok - @giantfox and @aliccolo Here are the two barbershops I was able to get added to the map. Like @PkmnTrainerJ said, these barbershop are located in the African-American community of Charlotte and ARE in fact a place to socialize and gather. One went right through on the first try and the other one took 7 different tries before it was accepted.

Let me know if you have any questions. I’m always willing to chat and swap ideas. BTW - the pool was fantastic!

Well, hometown pharmacies around here, the older ones anyway often have a Hallmark Card shop or an old soda fountain/ice cream shoppe in the pharmacy. Most newer ones don’t though.

Those actually look like big box type stores, I was thinking about ones that look like a hole in the wall or a house converted to barber shop.

I can’t control the look of the barbershops…I merely nominate what’s there. I can tell you this, I’ve been to both many times and the magic is on the inside with the people and the barbers. Not the aesthetics from the outside.

Honestly an old soda fountain sounds cool.

I really like stuff like that but can never get them approved. I can’t get coffee and ice cream shops approved either.

Sure, SOME barber shops or hair salons qualify, but MOST don’t. Most are just transactional - I place my order, get the service, pay for it, and leave. I don’t meet friends there, or make friends with whoever is already there.

I have an open mind for a nomination of one. But also, I have a suspicion that the nominator wants a Pokestop in that place, and nominated whatever happened to be right there. Same suspicion for any retail location - is it actually a great place to explore, or does it happen to meet someone’s idea for the gameboard? I’ll read what they write, and consider.

Chiming in here regarding the ice cream shop you mentioned. I have this sitting in the queue. Locals know it, so I am worried with an upgrade people will just bypass it. But it is in an out of the way area in whats more an industrial part of town, but is slowly growing. It’s popular with lines out the door and people go out of their way to go here. There would be likely two places in town you suggest to visitors and it would be here and the drive-in near a large park past the downtown core. I am big into looking up backstories on some more unique shops.
