I’ve been trying for a while to get a bar in my hometown approved as a wayspot with no success. This particular bar opened in the '50s, and I’m sure of this because the original owners were my great-aunts and the current owner is my uncle. I tried looking for official documents to prove this, but all I could come up with is a picture that would be dismissed as the surrounding area is unrecognizable. When I appealed one of the rejections, the answer I got was that “bars come under sensitive under the wayfarer criteria”, so now I’m just resigned to this wayspot not happening, but I would still like to ask in order to learn: I thought bars in Italy would be like cafes and diners in the US, or at least like restaurants (i.e. eligible even if not always a suitable wayspot). If I’m wrong about this, how should I approach future reviews of similar locations?
Can under 18s visit with an adult?
If so, then it can be eligible as a good place to socialise
In the UK pretty much every pub is a waypoint for that reason
“sensitive location” is definitely wrong.
Absolutely and an accompaning adult is not even required, as they sell all kinds of drinks and snacks (coffee, ice cream, pastries, etc.)
@NianticAaron can you give this a look and see what the appeals reviewers were intending to reject this for? It looks like a great Wayspot to me.
Yeah, so that would be fine to submit then.
The appeal is definitely incorrect in terms of the reasons given
I cant read your nomination text, and the picture could maybe show the bar name sign better, but the picture is not ineligible and I think bars overall can be great places to socialise so I do not understand the rejection, particularly for the reason given
Maybe the appeals team would like to reconsider or at least give a valid reason?
Agreed!
I wonder if they saw this scaffolding on street view and thought it was under construction?
But whatever they were doing then has clearly been finished.
Yeah I tried getting a better shot of the sign but I didn’t like the results, so I settled on a wide shot of the exterior. Actually now that I think about it I think a past nomination with a picture of the sign was rejected with “low quality picture” as the main reason : D
Its clearly the same building too, so shouldn’t have been an issue, but who knows what they were thinking given the reason!
Nice. I had a low quality picture recently that really wasnt either! Its frustrating.
Let’s hope they choose to comment here as to what happened and what the reason really was
i think this photo is fabulous. well composed, clearly focused, and shows the dining options that make this place so cute and interesting.
Thx mate!
I think it’s definitely been lost in translation that bars in Italy are like bars in the US. I’ve encountered this issue personally in a non-Wayfarer capacity and have had to explain to my (US American) mother that I don’t go to a bar every morning for breakfast, I go to a bar for breakfast lol. The best equivalent is indeed a cafe, but the appeal reviewers likely are simply unaware that when folks in Italy speak about a bar it isn’t an adult’s only alcohol place. Hopefully the appeal reviewers can accept the feedback that they got the rejection reason completely wrong on this one, at the very least.
This is incorrect. I see that this appeal was rejected over an year ago. We have revised the policies since then. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to revisit the decisions made so long back.
Thanks for the reply! I’ll try appealing my latest submission then. Fingers crossed
A suggestion, I would add any article/link in support of the information provided.
Thank you so much for the insight!
I know you said you didn’t have proof of the history, but can you link proof of the popularity? we have next door, yelp, etc. and sometimes i can find a feature article on the place in cary magazine or similar publication. i think links like that help, too. and especially try to find link that shows that this is not an adults only place.
I’d like to build a little on this great suggestion. Many cities have tourist sites or “what’s happening locally” that have been great resources for me on event sites or dining locations and offer reviews and additional context that I can use in my own nomination.
