Brooklyn Wayspot removed from Pokemon Go

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: Patriotic Hydrant
  • Location (lat/lon): 40°36’39.0"N 73°56’10.4"W
  • City: Brooklyn / NYC
  • Country: United States of America

This pokestop (originally accepted in 2022) disappeared sometime this week. It is still a Niantic Wayspot though. In NYC, painted-over fire hydrants mean that they are decommissioned so it isn’t a threat to public safety; there are lots of fire hydrants that are pokestops. It is far away from other pokestops so it doesn’t interfere with their cells. It is also on public property on the street just like the other points that are pokestops that you see in the screenshot. There was no good reason to remove it from Pokemon Go.

I would think that trying to remember that “painted over hydrants are decommissioned” would be difficult to remember on a city-by-city basis across the world.

Easier to “Just say, ‘No!’”.

Also, it may still be in Ingress, but not the source database. It just hasn’t caught up with the removal yet.

What evidence do you have for your appeal that these are decommissioned and strictly art now? That will help your case. Otherwise, these are not eligible:

Therefore, fire hydrants, regardless of their artistic aesthetic should be rejected.

And now it is gone from Ingress as well.

Even if it is true, it seems like it would follow the same rule of thumb as something like LFL on private property. Trying to track the nuances of various rules in all of the jurisdictions would be over whelming. Having blanket rules for the various games is easier to enforce.

Thanks for the appeal, @AfricanAstolfo We have taken another look but stand by our decision to retire this Wayspot.

That is not true. There’s no such rule in NYC.
Decommissioned fire hydrants are removed from the street, which happens EXTREMELY rarely since the city wouldn’t want to make firefighter’s job harder by removing access to water.
And this hydrant is NOT decommissioned. It is explicitly listed in the NYC’s Fire Hyrants map/database at https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Environment/Hydrant-Map/mrv2-ajhm as functional.

No there aren’t. And those that are still there are being removed.
