I couldn’t get a photo of the actual building as the gate was closed to get to the buildings. Anyway Elms Farm is a thriving, family-run livestock farm (that it’s current owners took over in 2003) with a focus on livery services, country pursuits and rare breeds. They produce there own Lamb and Beef whilst stocking chicken and pork locally from packington which is 20km/12.4miles away, they put the welfare of there livestock first, as well as promoting sustainable farming. Conservation management is at the heart of everything they do aswell. The whole team is committed to maintaining the highest standards throughout the use of the farmland. They have three barn conversions that each offer self-catering accommodation. All of the cottages are finished to a high standard, with enough space to house 4 people. They make the welfare of there animals top priority, they are reared and fed on as natural diet as possible. They have 3 butchers shops all a 10 minute drive from each other with the first one opening in 2018, a farm shop, a professional equestrian centre, a pick your own vegetables patch, Pick Your Own Sunflowers and Wildflowers Patch, A pick your own pumpkins for halloween and a maze in the summer. When selecting other producers they choose farmers who share there values. As part of there habitat management they have planted over 40,000 trees and reinstated over a mile of hedging, all of these services are at this farm in Costock apart from the 2 other butchers. Enough of my waffle now
Are you looking for help with this one?
I had this one just approved by Emily
My supplementary was a photo inside that include one of the award plaques and show how individual it looked.
I’m just wondering if I should nominate it as I know it can be a bit 50/50 and if so any recommendations to put in the description as its a pretty knew farm with services and to my knowledge its won no awards
No matter how good or bad it is, it will always be 50/50.
I was unsure what would happen to mine.
I think this is a classic case of focusing in on one aspect. So focus on the shop as a destination. And don’t mention the other stuff. It looks like you can get coffee social
What is at the shop that you think makes a different place to go to. What combination of products makes them unique/different.
I think a photo of a sign on the building works best if there is one. Your current one at first glance looks as though it’s just for the farm as the emphasis is not on the shop.
I think the equestrian centre could be a separate submission.
I dont think there’s anything unique about the shop, the products you can get there is meat, bread, cake, sauces, cheese, pie, fruit, milk, clothes and felting kits which is a different way of sewing. It’s basically a farm that focuses on local and homemade produce, sustainability and the wildlife with loads of events going on throughout the year. After looking through there bacon has won the great taste award in 2021
That sounds different to me.
These are not specific products you can get in an other shop easily - it looks as though they supply a few outlets but that will be a limited range.
So these are environmentally friendly (shop local philosophy) and you need to check out if they have ethical farming methods.
Ah see you have edited - the award is good too. I think there is plenty to work with.
Good to know, thanks. On there website it says that they’re ethical so I would assume so.
What there website says :
PASSION
We are passionate about provenance, and sustainable and ethical farming. These values drive our work to create an environmentally sound and welfare-orientated farm.
RESPECT
Our respect extends beyond our livestock to our land. We’ve partnered with Natural England to drive many environmental schemes on our farms. Our fields have grass margins around them, to protect hedgerows and encourage a safe environment for ecosystems to flourish. Many of our field corners are planted with wild bird seed mixes, or pollen and nectar mixes, to supply insects and farmland birds with vital food sources.

Yes that is very like what I had to work with for my submission.
Its really great to see these farms that are businesses but with care for the countryside.
Hope you can turn this into a good submission.
Probably the only thing that cares about the countryside in this part of the county. 7 new estates in the last 20 years in the village to the left of it and almost doubling it’s population. The new estates also only doing 25% of what they promised to give back to the wildlife and might even get solar farms that is going to cover 20% of farmland in the boundaries of that parish council. Ridiculous
Not quite the same but I had some success with a shop that sells organic food thats locally produced, and is staffed mainly by volunteers
I think farm shops are fantastic nominations, they are often destinatjons people travel to for high quality and local produce, and they are often an important community hub too
If a bar/restaurant was generic, as in the products are not different from the rest, but the location was what made it special: Next to the most touristic destination of the city, an incredibly high-transit zone, but hidden around a corner, making it the only place where you can breathe while having a coffee and not wanting to rip your ears due to people shouting around. Would that make a strong point for it?
