I keep getting cooldowns

I keep getting cooldowns on Wayfarer, and I don’t really understand why.

Most of my reviews match the final outcomes. I currently have 180 agreements out of 355 reviews, so I’m clearly not reviewing randomly. (Keep in mind most of those are still in voting so I think I’m not doing bad.)

The system says it detects a “pattern” in my reviews, but isn’t that the point? If nominations meet the same criteria, they should receive similar ratings. Consistency shouldn’t be penalized.

I’m reviewing based on the guidelines, not blindly accepting or rejecting. So what exactly triggers these cooldowns, and how are we supposed to stay consistent without being flagged?

Would appreciate some clarification.

Most people report cooldowns being triggered for reviewing too quickly.

My understanding is that cooldowns can happen if you review too fast, skip a lot of reviews, etc. Are you taking your time with the reviews, or moving through them very quickly?

Had my first one about three days ago. Speed and skipping make sense… I don’t do outside research, and I live rather close to an international border (26 km) and don’t speak/read their language so I skip a LOT.

Not counting the couple dozen I just did, I’ve done around 500 reviews (over six months) and have just over 360 agreements….

A note about skipping - just skipping in itself does not seem to cause a cooldown. But skipping through quickly without even considering the nomination could trigger the speed cooldown.

With my poor reading vision meaning I have to click on all the photos to enlarge them, and always checking the map for both satellite and street view, I have only had one cooldown ever. And that was a big 24 hour one. The only thing I could think of at the time was that I had just walked away from my computer with a review up on my screen many times, so I began making sure that I always changed the menu to a different tab on Wayfarer and haven’t had another one. I was using the Showcase tab but since that is gone, I usually leave the page on the Map or the Profile now. But a lot of other folks say leaving reviews up to time out does not cause cooldowns for them.

Another older reviewer with eyesight and brain processing - Dyslexic brain- meaning I am a slow reviewer and cool downs have been very rare… repeatedly falling asleep i think caused one :joy:

My only one was a 24 hour, I didn’t know they came shorter!

So I’m being penalized for not being bilingual? (as mentioned I live close to a border, so I get a lot of “local” noms in a foreign language that I do not speak.)

Nowadays Webbrowsers have precise enough, easy access translation tools to get the gist of a nomination text.

Is this still not helping you to avoid skipping much?

There is no translation offered within Wayfarer. I am expected to use third party software while reviewing simply because it wants to feed me nominations in a foreign language because they are “local”?

I Skip often.

If I can not see that a nomination is where they say it is I am not going with “It is probably there” so I Skip.

I have reached the “100 skips within 24 hours” numerous times but this has not caused any other Cool Downs apart from not being able to Skip.

Why does wayfarer need to provide that if the solution is right in front of you?

I have my bonus location in Holland where I don’t speak the language. I copy-paste the title and description into a tab that has the URL for google translate. This only takes a few extra seconds.

When we were doing reviewing challenges in other countries, I used the Google Translate extension for Chrome.

That sounds a bit like too many steps, some browsers have the option to mark and translate something on the site so you don’t need to copy and drop around stuff

What I described is something that can be done in any browser and without adding any extra software or extensions. Low-tech, but solves the problem that @CostcoShopper13 had with using third-party software.

Hey @RedOneEight ,

I don’t see any cooldowns on your account currently. Did you receive any message or pop-up?

Since it helps to see the solution, this is how to access native translation inside Chrome.

I’m just questioning the logic of Wayfarer feeding foreign language “locals”, not providing translation, and then penalizing skipping rather than going to outside effort to translate.

I’m not using Chrome.

Just about every browser should be able to do this these days. It takes 30 seconds to Google that information

I don’t think you’ve been around Wayfarer long enough to have participated in a review challenge. Historically those offered nice rewards to us for reviewing in a specific country or region. Those countries almost always featured submissions in a language foreign to the majority of people participating in the challenge. We all discovered how to review using the native translate function of our browsers. As a group, we accomplished fantastic things in those challenges.
