I have made location edits that were pulled into Niantic review and so far two were rejected and I was moving the pin location on top of the objects. One was for a park sign and the other for a golf course sign.
I am wondering what they are basing their reviews on because the park sign waypoint was originally misplaced out in the middle of a parking lot and the streetview in my wayfarer dashboard showed the correct location on streetview for the edit I made.
The golf course sign was 5m off before I edited the location.
I am hoping I am not going to get a warning on my wayfarer account trying to improve locations only to have them rejected by an employee. I was basing the moves by satellite view and streetview.
I have an example of one being reviewed by the Niantic team and rejected. I think I was wholly right to attempt this edit. I don’t know why they didn’t approve it.

I have an acceptance of about 50% on location edits even though the correct location is easily identifiable on satellite view. I also received a warning for malicious location edit so I’m not sure I’ll do location edits anymore. I’ve had good and bad experiences but it gets mind boggling to think that 3 edits were denied in Niantic review. On a good note, I had a location edit denied twice by the community and on the third try it went into Niantic review and was accepted. Bad thing about that one was that after it got denied twice, I submitted a different POI in that cell and it was accepted before the move edit was accepted.
I don’t think location edits went to AI before now. They took longer to resolve, and I feel like I saw every one when reviewing. But mostly: it would be hardest for an algorithm (modeling) to learn to judge.
But because Niantic wanted location changes for this challenge (and hoped everyone would use their 40 and want more the next day), I’m guessing they were hoping to get enough to train the AI to do them.
For the training, typically 80% are manually reviewed, then fed to the Machine Learning. Then we’d see what it learned, by letting it review the other 20%.
Had you submitted an appeal against the edit rejection, which was also not accepted or have they simply reversed the original rejection without an appeal?
I did not appeal I moaned about it here (above) & on Wayfarer Discord. EDIT: Sadly I can’t tell you when this was ‘overturned’ as the plugins don’t seem to cover edit status changes unlike they do with submissions.
I am seeing more being pulled into review by Niantic review and it isn’t ML as it has the niantic balloon next to the nominations on the contributions page.
I have seen some questionable rejects from in house reviewing of location edits such as leaving signs away from actually being on the sign itself. Just had one rejected to where they left a sign 3m off of from where it actually is and can be seen by satellite view.
