Location edits?

Ok how the hell do you guys figure these out?

We see a satélite map of a tiny object with no way to know what was first what is correct or anything.

I tend to just pick the most accessable and shaded option :joy:

It would help if you used Streetview to narrow down the more appropriate location.

If you are unable to determine the correct location between satellite and Streetview then you should be using the checkbox labelled “Unable to determine correct location.” Selecting “the most accessable and shaded option” can lead to you selecting locations that are incorrect, and not proper practice.

I’m experiencing the same here. For example:

  • sometimes they place two or more suggestions very close to each other
  • sometimes, the point is inaccurately located, and there’s no way to suggest a new location
  • when the Wayspot is being blocked by skyscrappers, I really am clueless

If there’s street view is years out of date, even the satélite is often old

Then what happens to the edit? Sits in limbo to end of time?

Sometimes there’s like 5 location to pick from

I figured people would prefer shade…

I try to go out of my way locating items even in the distance or over google maps, as streetview is very limited, usually only main roads. But sometime even a clear satellite image or streetview would not help.

In cases like these, for instance. I can very clearly see the church, the waypoint is at the entrance, perfect. But it should be moved…5 meters ? Why ? If I knew what the original location was, I would choose that one, because I see NO plausible reason for this edit. Now all I can do is either guess or skip.

And about 3/4 of the location edits are of this type, sometimes (or usually) without the object itself being even remotely visible.

I know of a couple of reasons for moves like this. Edits have been taking YEARS to complete. Moving a portal used to break links, so some edits were done for game reasons. In other cases, the location has been corrected already, most likely through help chat, but this old edit still remains. There may be more reasons.

I also do my best to try to locate it, but check that “Unable to find an appropriate location” on more than half of the edits I get. Hopefully now that edits are moving through the system again, we will eventually see less of this kind.

Was that considered legal then, or was it basically a kind of cheating /abuse ? Because it kind of feels like the latter…

And yes, about 75% of them I HAVE to choose ‘unable’.

Meh, yes moving for game advantage is abuse. But sometimes it was a correction, too, so :woman_shrugging:

In this case there is actually no correction imaginable. I do see some that are though, or I consider them such, like moving a marker from the middle of a field/building to the edge/entrance and choose that one. In cases like the above, I can only guess or pass. For reasons of not risking my rating, I rather not guess.

I am very very very carefull and reluctant to report abuse. That has to be 100% certain, and I dont think this is. Or I’m not sure it is.

I’ve seen a few where it looks like they tried to move it into their house

Sometimes an edit correctly moves an object into a new cell because it was incorrect before, or because the object moved, ie renovation work.

And since you need special tools to even begin to see what the cells are, which in themselves carry a terms of service warning, and more special tools to see what the original position was and whats a new edit, honestly what are we supposed to do? I have none of these special tools, and the current niantic stance of immediate ban for edits like that has left me scared to move a playground even though the playground is now in a different cell (whole site renovated, new layout is a little different, still same name and same overall location)

same - i can’t think of a time i have reported for sure abuse on a location edit.

my bad - i was only talking about the ones with no discernable reason for the edit XD - i do have the tool installed that shows me cells and forget not everyone does.

fwiw i don’t let that influence which pin i choose. i use it to post screenshots in our local discord to explain about L17 S2 cells, and why the wayspot submitted can’t show up in pokemon go.

and the map view also shows why they can’t get away with submitting something that isn’t actually there in an empty cell. way more people submit locally than review.

I’ve seen a few moved to private property that I’ve reported

as long as you are sure which is the edit and which is the current, and that the private property is SFPRP (single family private residential property) then :+1:

Eventually, the system recognizes that a consensus cannot be reached and the edit is rejected. It’s unfortunate, but sometimes that’s the reality of location edits and Wayfarer in general.

If you’re voting on a location edit, either you’re sure the edit is correct or you’re not. Picking an edit location because “I figured people would prefer shade…” could lead to you choosing an incorrect location, perhaps even a location that aids in Wayfarer abuse and could lead to you getting an email from the Wayfarer team about your voting habits. Please stop voting in this manner.

Yeah I’ll be looking closer at them though if I don’t see it in the sun it must be in the shade

Niantic should add a motivation input to this

I report as abuse those location edits that include a title/description edit with thing like “move to X to change cell”. Which are something like 40% of the location edits I get.

Other 40% are moving the Wayspot closer to their homes and 20% are actually fixing the wrong location.

Has anyone else been seeing location edits where there is only one dot to choose from instead of 2+? I’ve had a couple like this today. Is this just a glitch on my end, or something else going on?

I have had two or three of them in the past weeks. I presume for reasons I yet don’t understand, it is two points exactly on top of each other ? I just choose the one point in those cases.
