My 2 POI have been rejected

I am new to the forum…sort of. I’ve read of few things on here mostly from people linking the forum on Reddit. I do not know how to make a post on this forum. Maybe the computer would be better than the phone? I can’t even change my profile picture. I had a question about rejected wayspots that I had submitted. There is a Google maps issue and it says there is a daycare at a location that isn’t. I have sent the meta data photo of where the actual daycare is. My two POI have been rejected because of the Google maps issue which I have tried to fix there but it won’t change. Street view shows the actual location of the daycare and I would not like to have to go through the whole appeals process since I have already used them. Especially with my picnic area that was eMily rejected that was later accepted after the appeal. Please instruct me how to fix my issue or where I should go. If I have to appeal I will, but I cannot attach a photo to an appeal and the character count on appeals is not big enough.

Thanks

Hello and Welcome @HoundNugget

It can be a very confusing layout in this forum until you find your way around….and that’s why we are here to help guide new people to the best places to post :+1::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Don’t worry about things like the profile picture tgat is not something open to all partcipants. But do ask questions if you are not sure about using this discourse set up.

So I have split your post into its own topic and placed it in nomination support. Here we can help look at individual nominations to understand what the issues are and suggest solutions.
Can you please post your full nomination so that experienced wayfinders can see exactly what the issue is.

@HoundNugget When posting the details of the nomination, please make sure you include

  • the location from the submission receipt email (it looks like 24.2327831, -19.2332 and is found below the photos)
  • the rejection narrative(s) from your wayfarer account
  • whether it was rejected by “our team” or “the community”.

Hello and thank you for your response. I was very tired and wrote to you while in bed, but today is a new glorious day! I will respond with all information to the comment below as they are asking for the specifics. Again Thank you - Hound Nugget

Hello @salixsorbus I have the two different receipt Lat/Long.
Historic Thayer Gargoyle is 36.522852, -91.544354

Historic Thayer School of Engineering is 36.523011, -91.544533

Both of them have the same rejection narrative because they are both on the same building which reads “The submission is on an education facility, primarily for children aged 18 and under”

And both of the rejections say that they were rejected by the community.

This area is a mess with the Google maps locations of several businesses and places. They are either nonexistent or closed permanently. I have been working with Google Maps on a few of the places and have correctly placed the locations of the businesses that are still around. It’s a lot of hard work, but I totally enjoy making and personalizing the game and community!

Here are a lot of supplemental photos just in case. All of the photos of the Thayer Head Start should have the meta data included with them. I do not know if that is possible while downloading on the computer like it is directly from the phone.

I would also like to say that I have had great and positive experiences with all Niantic people whether it be here, Reddit, or the Help Chat. I see a lot of people complaining, but honestly I have had many interactions and they have all been great so I like to give congratulations to you and positive feedback because we need more of that in the world.

Thank you and please let me know if you need any more information and I can provide it.

This is for the Gargoyles.

These will be for the School of Engineering

This is the Thayer Head Start location information and also the photos I’ve taken from the location of the head start.

and that lat/long is 36.522048, -91.547087

Google maps does indeed list this location as a pre-school, so anyone checking the location will use that as an immediate rejection. A closer look shows one review from 9 years ago and googling for Thayer Head Start shows them 250m to the west in a much smaller building that has a school bus outside on streetview and no google maps label.

You would need to add links and text into your supporting information to prove that this location is no longer a school. I would use something like “This location is no longer a school - see xxxx and xxxxx”.

There is a second problem. On streetview for the location where you have the gargoyles, they don’t exist in 2024 or 2023, while in 2016 and 2008 the entire gateway doesn’t exist. Have they been added since November 2024? If so, it would be very helpful to have proof that they exist there (links).

This old engraving definitely exists and is eligible (imho). A casual look at the photos shows that the building is degraded, supporting the idea that it is no longer a school.

Your description needs to be very clear that is no longer a school. A casual reading will risk the impression that it is still a school. Alternative might be “The Thayer School of Engineering operated here from xxxx to yyyy before zzzz.”. If you can say what happened to it, that helps (there is a "Thayer School of Engineering in Dartmouth - any connection?) - you would then put evidence for this in the supporting information.

You could reference the peeling paint etc. You could also take your supporting photo from closer in so that the condition of the doorway is very clear. Normally, I would say this is an excellent supporting photo, as it shows the POI, shows the context and clearly matches up to streetview, but in this case, the state of the building is important to show (as well as the context and making sure it matches easily to streetview).

For both of these, it would be very helpful to move the google maps pin for Thayer Head Start to the correct location.

Not exactly the same situation but here is one of my nominations where I was submitting a fire station that would once have been categorically ineligible (like a school), but as it had closed down and been redeveloped into something else, I was able to nominate it for the importance of the building as a great place to explore

Like was explained above, trying to find dates especially for when the school closed and adding them to the description can help reviewers see that the school doesn’t need to be rejected. I am also thinking that since it was a school for engineering, was that more of an over 18s thing ie further education than a children’s school? So that could also be worth mentioning if you want to.

I love the gargoyles :smiling_cat_with_heart_eyes:

Can you find them on streetview? I failed :frowning:

From the pin, looks like its internal to the buildings area so the street view car couldn’t see them? I assume through some gates/doors that are closed on street view. It seems reasonable to me that they could exist though-the look of the buildings does match what I can see so I wouldn’t be concerned

This picture looks like the outside the building and matches up to the streetview images, except for the gargoyles. Note the white building in the distance.

Yeah, it does actually look like that- I had wondered if it was instead through that into an ineer area but you’re probably right

I hope the op can explain this what they come back - they are probably asleep right now - since I don’t get the impression of them being fake, except I cannot justify the mismatch between the photo and streetview.

Yes I have tried to move the Head Start Pin a couple times and Google even gave me reviewer points but it has never moved. I am not sure why. I was hoping to not have to resubmit these two again as I am also on almost zero submissions. This town basically had nothing before I moved here. But alas I will go back out and resubmit them.
The Gargoyles’ are newer yes, Which is why they look fresh compared to the building. When I was here in May 2024 they were here. So they were there before that. I have only been coming to this area for the past 5 years to visit my parents, but just recently moved here in August. There is a lot of stone artwork in a covered awning behind the building and I suspect that the business that is here makes stone artwork. I do not know what the business name is though because there aren’t any signs.

I would have figured the peeling pain and the corrosion of the stone in the main photo would have been sufficient enough for showing that it is no longer a school. It wasn’t even a school for children when it was a school, even if it was still a university where adults went it still has historical significance.

Whoa, how did you embed street view into your comment? That is awesome!

The Gargoyles can be seen from the street in person yes, on top of that gate there, I know I should have taken a better photo from the sidewalk of the outside, but I wanted to get them with the building and side view to show as much as possible. I have a tendency to now walk on grass at institutions due to my time in the Navy where it was strictly prohibited. I do if I consciously think about it, but when I’m in the moment of doing something else that’s just programmed

Yes the gargoyles are real and yes I am a real human being. Out of all the submissions I have sent in this one would have been in my top 3. The other two are neon signs at night. One was just accepted. It is a historic theater that no longer exists, but they restored the sign and pained classic movie murals on the side of the building. Here’s the photo just as a brag.

It is definitely on the exterior of the building. The business that is there makes stone work exactly like this and has a shed in the back of the building with a ton of it. I once lived near a foundry and they had a TON of their work that either wasn’t paid for or they didn’t exactly do right on the front lawn. It was out of the way and a really awesome place to visit.

I was wondering if the information that I have submitted below is sufficient for an overturn? I can provide what ever details you need. I did not realize the person below was not an ambassador also when they asked questions. Still disoriented in this chat as I am now seeing duplicate responses too when I reply to someone.

Hi,
We are all fellow wayfinders, and don’t worry there is a dizzying amount of “stuff” to take in so please just to ask :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
There is a small team of ambassador/ moderators and we can move posts around……otherwise in terms of answering its very much peer support so a range of those with time will post. We all want to help each other out.
I think the item that would help is a geo tagged photo
GPSmapcamera is a free app that prints the location and date on the photo this would help demonstrate what is there now.

When you are in streetview on Windows, there is share icon at the top right
image

On Android, it is below the streetview on the right-hand-side.

Choose to copy the shortcut and it is a live shortcut of that view.

I think both of these submissions are eligible and should get accepted, but you need to do some legwork to make this happen. Finding out what business is now at that location would help a lot if that rogue google maps pin won’t move.
