I was reviewing submissions today and I came across one with a suuuuuper long title, but the POI itself was a perfect addition in my opinion. I opted to skip this one and let another user make the decision, but I wanted to ask what the general best course of action for submissions like these would be so I can make the right call in the future.
If there was an option to suggest a better title, I would have done that, but I didnāt see that option anywhere and I didnāt feel right just denying the POI because the person submitting it made the title a description rather than the place name. Maybe Iām just being too nice
Iām really new to this, so any advice would be really helpful!
Thanks!
People will tell you I do super long titles for my nominations andā¦theyāre absolutely right.
Personally I donāt see an issue with it so long as itās a valid title.
Something like āKing George VI Postbox (Saint Michaelās Road)ā is a decent length but summarises the POI well. Whereas a title like āKing George VI Red Pillar Box on corner of Saint Michaelās Road, next to Bobās Chip Shop and Margaretās Cheese & Wine Storeā has a little too much in it for me.
I donāt want to embarass the user if they read this, but the title Iām talking about was something like this:
ālocally owned business that serves the college sports community!!ā
Your titles are at least actual titles, this one was just a description. The photo included a sign showing the business name, so they really should have just titled it that in my opinion
Yeeee thatās a long one, but not inaccurate in the slightest! I actually like the long titles, reminds me of those animes that have ridiculously long names LOL
I would reject that for the title, as itās worthless. Itās a description, not a title.
Itās not actually that long, even ignoring that ludicrously long one from @PkmnTrainerJ. Plenty of my submissions have more words than that, especially for trail markers.
Longer titles have more chance of being accurate and unique. A lot of submitters forget about the requirement for (relative) uniqueness, which is referenced in the submission process.
I suspect I am more strict than a lot of reviewers, but my wayfinder rating is stuck on āgreatā, so Iām not about to become any less strict just to get acceptances.
TBH, if itās ridiculously long and should probably be the description then Iād lean towards reject. Itās not always easy to get the title changed at a later date.
Categories are meaningless to all gameplay mechanics. They only have meaning to Niantic, if they still do, as they add value to the wayspot database for the purposes of selling data to third parties.
There is /nothing/ you can suggest to be changed about a submission - only accept or reject.
I think maybe I need to be a bit more strict. I probably hit āskipā when I should just reject something too often. Since Iām new I guess Iām just afraid of being too mean, and I always feel bad for the people who get their submissions rejected, but some of them are just⦠bad.
I think Iām probably just seeing a bunch of junk submissions right now because eMiLy is taking a nap.
There are some where I donāt, like some people just KNOW what they are submitting does not qualify at all. But there are others where I can tell someone was genuinely putting effort into it, but the photo orientation was wrong or the image was blurry, etc. I feel kind of bad for those people, but I hold waystop quality to the highest standard so they get rejected.
The level of junk in the queue without eMiLy is just absurd. I donāt remember it being this bad before we had eMiLy, but it certainly shows how much eMiLy helps us.
Iām rejecting maybe 95% of what comes infront of me. Not āPermanent and Distinctā is being used a lot, since this is recommended rejection reason when you need to reject but canāt reject for Appropriate, Safe or Accuracy.
Remember - if you want to reject, you must thumbs down for one of Appropriate, Safe, Accuracy or Permanent and Distinct. Saying it doesnāt meet Social, Exercise or Exploration does not count as a rejection.
Reject for photo. Donāt skip those, because when it is an obvious reject, skipping means someone else has to reject it instead of you. Save skips for when you canāt decide, not for when you canāt bring yourself to reject a sloppy submission.
It is important to use the most accurate title to reflect the name of the object you are nominating. Submit titles that are official titles when known. In cases where there is no official title, be as descriptive as you can.
Do submit:
A unique title for each Wayspot
Additional identifiers for similar Wayspots as needed
If there is no āofficialā title, use creative titles to distinguish it from other nearby Wayspots
Donāt submit titles that:
Include real names, initials, codenames, or faction/team names
Include emojis, emoticons, or irrelevant game references
Include HTML, URLs, or other code language
Are unrelated to the Wayspot in question
Imo, that title you asked about veers into the irrelevant category.
The title should be short and set up what it is.
The description then says what it is
I donāt score low just on a poor title.
Edits can sort out a poor one @PkmnTrainerJ knows that if I get close enough I would be tempted to edit that one
Usually if the title is poor, so is the description.
Donāt forget the I donāt know option when assessing.
And finally the nomination does not need to be perfect, it needs to be good enough. Not looking for reasons to vote down but is there enough about the object, photo, text to get it accepted photos and text can be changed
