Im also thinking from the lack of any Niantic staff popping into this thread to talk about these residential houses (which they would happily help with if they were waypoints!!) that the wayfarer team have been instructed not to engage on this?

An interesting thing that has happened here, is all the Power Spots are on a 2 day timer, after which they disappear and are replaced with a new one somewhere else in (I believe) the same level 17 S2 cell. Initially we had most of the blocked Lightship Portals as Power Spots, but 2 rotated out this morning to be replaced by junk.

One of them, a big mural, was replaced by a Tattoo Palour that closed in 2017, and whose premises were remodelled into two new shops (which are now a mini market and a vape shop)

One of mine disappeared but nothing close reappeared so I think it might be wider cell based?

Presumably since these are also going to appear and disappear at intervals, we wont know if something that disappeared was due to a successful report or if it was just gone due to a timer running out?

Sounds like we would just be playing whack a mole

So one that was scheduled to end at 4:59 this morning was just reset for a new 2 day period. There are plenty of Ingress only portals around that could have replaced it.

Yeah, that would be my assumption. Obviously, people should report them if they want to, but this is a global issue, not something that is restricted to one or two bad spots. So I guess, in theory, people could ā€œcurateā€ their local area by removing these one at a time IF they take action. But its a lot of work to try and correct a VERY flawed system.

I hadnt worked out what the 04:59 meant but clearly was being slow :laughing:

One of the ones I could see yesterday disappeared by this morning and theres a new one somewhere else. The one that disappeared was at a real, current shop at least - was a parcel drop off - the new one is someones house :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

A further interesting point from this database is if you click on some of the business/points it lists the source of the data, and one of the common ones is ā€œMetaā€. So it looks as though the underlying database is partly scraped from Facebook pages, maybe Instagram profilesā€¦

Facebook and Instagram, definitely the place to find legitimate legal business premises that arenā€™t just a sideline run from someoneā€™s house where theyd never expect/want a customer to show up :sweat_smile:

Yes. Thatā€™s what I meant. Thanks for sharing how to do it as itā€™s not clear. It is in other comments here but not easily findable.

Iā€™ve reported quite a lot that are (now inactive) home businesses but no idea what action will be taken if any.

I guess youā€™re not limited on reports of them, so in theory could report twice for different things, but I donā€™t know if that would be considered abuse.

Or if anyone is even reading the reports. See also: any reported Routes.

Looking some more at the database there are some real gems in these. In my local area, at some point someone has set up a Facebook page for a street, seemingly mistakenly creating it as a business. This has been scraped into the database/map as a business.

The Facebook page seems dead, but sometimes it seems when another business tags the street (as in their location), they mistakenly tag this business account. So the page is just lost businesses of Facebook tagging a ā€œbusinessā€ that isnā€™t even a business and almost certainly is a mistake.

So looking forward to this being a Power Spot at some point in the future.
