Ask yourself about the powerspots

How often do you update the map to show new energy points?

We’ve just seen three new PokéStop POIs appear that couldn’t appear due to occupied cells. We’ve now submitted more and want to know if these will also be converted or if it’s just random.

Staff has confirmed that unused Wayspots in PoGo may get used as Power Spots.

There’s no guarantee, but there is a good chance, as per the staff post. I can confirm that Wayspots I have submitted that are in already occupied cells have become Power Spots from time to time.

We aren’t quite for sure how often the map is updated for Power Spots, but some did notice updates at the beginning of April and another at the beginning of May. I did have an approved Wayspot in an occupied cell that was approved in April now show up this month from time to time.

More info on Power Spots can be found here:

Will there be another requirement? Like a minimum distance? We noticed that the two new ones that appeared are approximately 50 meters, because we have others that are no more than 30 meters, and those haven’t appeared yet. These points have been on the site for over a year, and the new ones that appeared were only accepted last month.

This is all we have been told by staff about Power Spots at this time. Some have noticed that a certain number of Power Spots may appear in a certain area, but nothing has been confirmed.

Again, there’s a chance that unused Wayspots will be used, not a guarantee.

You don’t get your answer from Niantic statements. What has been however more or less established by the community are two rules:

  1. In a level 14 cell (the same one used for determining gyms), there can be only 2 powerspots active at the same time. If there are more eligible powerspots, they will rotate, but only 2 will be active at a time.

  2. A powerspot needs to be at least 22 meters away from the nearest pokestop or a gym.

As for syncing, they are doing it on an irregular basis these days, maybe once a month or something like that, but don’t quote me on that.

Powerspots do /not/ need to be 22 meters from the nearest pokestop. The closest powerstop to my home location is 2 or 3 meters away from a pokestop, and there are others in the area just as close to the nearest gym/pokestop. (All of the gyms/pokestops existed before powerstops were added into pogo.)

Also, powerstops can definitely exist in empty L17 cells, but only if they are not created from wayspots as the non-wayspot locations cannot be pokestops - e.g., companies, offices..

You are correct about the second part, my mistake. I forgot about imports. I edited my post accordingly.

However I would question the first part. How long has that powerspot been around? I have never seen anything like what you are describing, they have always been a reasonable distance apart - unless there were sync issues, such as a new wayspot becoming a powerspot, then becoming a pokestop at the same time and then the powerspot disappearing. Also have you actually measured it on the map? 2 meters is super close, I’m not even sure you could spin the stop at that distance with powerspot being over it.

As far as I can remember, that powerspot has existed since they were added to the game. I’ll recheck the distance and come back.

Wow. I was completely wrong - it’s more than 22 meters away from the pokestop. At least I was right about the non-wayspot powerstops in L17 cells

I wish there was more clear and precise information  I don’t know if it’s because of the transition of the change of company or what, but well in 2 places we have proposals that have an active PokeSpot and these are more than 22 meters away and are 1 year old and in no update has a powerspot appeared, however in others where there were also proposals with the cell occupied, these were approximately 50 meters away and these did become powerspots without mentioning that these proposals were barely accepted last month. so I think there is no minimum distance or anything like that, I think it’s luck and coincidence.

The other part seems to involve S2 cells. It seems that there may be a limit of 2 active Power Spots per L14 cell.

Don’t we all…

There’s a good deal of info that users have had to work out themselves.
