New Wayspots in Pokémon GO - Discussion

No.
It is just the same simple place holder photo for all.

Am I missing something here?

All the gift name tells folks is that you spun a pokestop at that corner. It names the location. It’s not saying you live there. Every other pokestop in game also has a name. It’s not an intersection name, but does give an exact location.

IMO, my bigger concern would be that Niantic put a pokestop in my front yard, encouraging people to trespass there at any hour of the day or night. Niantic once lost a lawsuit over this, leading to the emphasis on rejecting anything on single family private residential property.

So I recently signed in to Pokémon Go and noticed a lot of new waypoints in my area. I clicked on them and they all turned out to be street signs. I googled it and it says its a temporary test, so at some point I’m assuming they will all be removed. What are your thoughts on these generic poi making it into the game?

Hello and welcome @Valuhree

This is the announcement about the test

I will merge your post into the linked discussion about it. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I would not assume this to be the only outcome of the test.

Welcome to the forum!

I was very excited when I thought they were trying to do something to help rural players. But the announcement does not say “rural”. It says “areas with low Wayspot density”. The ones I have seen are showing up in suburban areas, and most of them are SFPRP. Add that to the fact that these points of interest do not meet criteria, and I think this is a disaster for Wayfarer.

Edited to add that if the Scopely owners are trying to get away from Wayspots submitted as “points of interest” and just stick game locations places where people will use them, this may be the way to go. Players like the Ambassador Pokestops and Sponsored Pokestops (and gyms) and I have yet to see a Community Campsite, but they seem to be well received.

Hey there! I would actually love to see if there is a way to nominate an area for where Niantic sets up waypoints. My neighborhood seems to be a good use case where there is a sufficient amount of people who walk within the community but have lack of POIs to make into pokestops due to strict HOA regulations on house appearances.

No, Niantic imports are not done by request.

Hello and Welcome,

At the moment the Niantic Imports are in a test phase.

The started with certain countries in Europe last year and recently announced the US.

They seem to be working these on some sort of an algorithm (Player density? Population? Current waypoints?). They are unlikely to announce what triggers them as it could lead to players “gaming the system”.

In the mean time why not try and nominate some waypoints yourself, they are areas that struggle for waypoints loads of people here love to check google maps and make suggestions. If you are happy to state your area I am sure someone will get back to you.

Good Luck.

I’d stopped reviewing waypoints some time ago as the AI ramp up resulted in only questionable submissions making it to volunteer reviewers, and all of our ratings tanking as there was little agreement on those questionable submissions. This move, allowing street corners and bus stops to be waypoints, seems like another degradation of the system. Those places don’t the meet criteria (nor the spirit of Wayfarer as I understood it) and will almost certainly make newer players/reviewers less certain about their own submissions or reviews. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like this at all.

Street corners do not go through the Wayfarer process. You will never see an official one to review. If you see one, a player has copied the initiative. However, we have been given explicit instructions that these do not meet Wayfarer criteria.

Hola seaprincesshnb, Yes, I understand that they do not go through the process. My point was only that people new to the games will see these in the games, and… Maybe it’s just me.

Many of us on these forums have voiced similar concerns and made several suggestions in this thread. It’s a long read but to simplify we would life the imports to be obvious with suggestions such as…

  • Generic Image (Niantic Logo?).
  • Generic Title.
  • Maybe using the Description to state “Generic Import. May not meet standard Wayfarer Criteria”.

It has been suggested that some of these suggestions may be used but we have to accept, it’s Niantics game and we have to accept what changes they decide.

@NianticTintino Any update if we should expect more of these new wayspots to pop up anytime soon?

Many of us have said that almost all of these (hundreds and hundreds) that we have seen on the map are SFPRP. Is the team intending to do anything about this? Do you want every single SFPRP wayspot reported individually? I have yet to see one that is not placed on SFPRP.

Question, isn’t the entire point of these new wayspots that they are supposed to help people in areas like suburbs where almost everything is SFPRP. Where would they be placed in situations where there really is only SFPRP or a dangerous street? I agree that it’s counterintuitive esp w past lawsuits etc but it seems like this is working as intended?

i know i am seeing posts here where these have been reported for removal. my question is to staff to see if they want us to do this. or if they intend to make any adjustments.

If the idea is that they are street corners and bus stops then surely the pin should be on the street corner or bus stop?

I have only seen examples here as they have not been released in the UK but it seems that many of them are located in the garden.

Nobody will be expecting to stand in someone’s garden so they are still going to be standing on the “dangerous street”.

Surely a location edit is the way to go to put them where they should be?

Can we flag these so they don’t show up on the nearby when doing reviews?

Unfortunately, this is not possible as long as the Wayfarer team continues to manage this Wayspot.

When PoGo manages such special PokéStops, they are treated the same as sponsored spots, so they won’t appear in nearby results during review.

Furthermore, if PoGo manages this special Wayspot, it can display special icons, titles, and descriptions like sponsored spots. However, if the Wayfarer team manages it, such measures cannot be taken.

When viewing Wayfarer from PoGo, there’s likely no way to distinguish whether a particular Wayspot is community-managed or imported.
