Following recent removals and location updates, there are two cells that are now “dead” and NO wayspot from that cell is in Pokemon GO. According to the rules, one of them should be a pokestop instead.
A slight correction - there are no official rules to how the cells are used, just what the Pokemon Go community have built up as their own understanding. Niantic have never officially confirmed the usage of the cells and how they work.
Strangely, the co-ordinates you have provided are only a couple of metres apart and exist in the centre of the same cell. There is nothing showing in Ingress in this cell, so either the removals are not recent or they have been done independently by Niantic Spatial for Ingress.
You could drop your coordinates into google maps and check where they are in relation to the image I just posted. You will see they are both in the same place. I can’t tell which is the other cell you are asking about.
There is a way to see the gyms and stops in Pokemon Go on a map, but I haven’t got round to activating it and can’t remember how to do it. Hopefully someone drops by who does remember.
@salixsorbus I see there are actually many empty cells in this area, several which have valid wayspots showing in Pokemon Go. Wonder why there are no pokestops in this cells though, as some of them had working stops not so long ago. I used to play frequently in 2023-2023 and only now came back and see many dead areas in the game
Since Pokemon Go and Ingress split in May 2025, the Ingress map is becoming less useful for showing pokestops and gyms due to subsequent changes in either game, but is reliable for the cell boundaries.
One thing you can do is to go there in person, open the wayspot submission map (with the toggle
turned on to show other objects) and see what is in the system (but not showing). You might find that objects do not exist in the system at all or might find them as hidden wayspots.
Yeah, I get your point! The issue is that these wayspots are there in person.
I also just updated the gps coordinates for the second cell I mentioned, for some reason I pasted it wrong.
The powerspots cause slight problems with trying to work out what players think should be visible.
Some powerspots were imports, which have nothing to do with pokestops/gyms/wayspots, but can look exactly the same. They were imported without descriptions or photos, but players have been allowed to give them descriptions and photos (which I feel is a mistake, but Niantic take a different view).
On the in-game wayspot submission map, anything showing without a description or photo is going to be an imported powerspot and can be ignored (for the purposes here). Anything that does have a description and/or photo might still be an imported powerspot.
Other powerspots are created from accepted wayspots, which don’t appear as pokestops/gyms to the density rules, so it is unlikely you have any in these two cells.
