Painted Poems with Art on Hospital Grounds

Hello everyone,

I spend a lot of time in a nearby hospital and am responsible for most of the waypoints inside and around the grounds (mostly art and statues, but also a café and some trail markers that pass through the grounds). Many of these have taken several attempts to get through the AI and reviewers. I think many reviewers reject them outright because they are in/near a hospital, but from my understanding as long as they are otherwise eligible then patients/visitors can have things to explore as well.

Two submissions in particular have been giving me issues recently. There are two stairwells exiting the very large visitor parking garage, each with a different poem and related imagery painted on the wall. These are about 200 meters away from each other and are on different floors, and have been here since the hospital was opened (i. e. not temporary or seasonal). Unfortunately I have had a rougher time than normal getting these approved. I have been denied by the AI, and also have been rejected by reviewers with reasons ranging from “private residence or farm” to “interferes with emergency services” to “generic business.” I finally decided to use an appeal on one of them and got a rejection from the Appeals Team because it was a “poem inscribed on wall which is not unique”.

Why are these not unique? Surely at least one of them is unique, though since they are so far apart and are different poems by different poets with different accompanying art then I would think they both are unique. I am appealing the rejected appeal here to hopefully get a second look from the Wayfarer Team.

Title: Kraan Open, gedicht door Fred Fontein

Description: This poem by Fred Fontein from the collection ‘Waar ik weg waai’ is painted on the wall of the stairwell exiting the parking garage into the hospital. Full poem text: water geven / doet de regen / buiten in de lucht / planten nat maken // boven in de lucht / engeltje zet kraan open / en dan weer dicht / dan is droog buiten.

Supporting information: This is a poem painted artistically on the wall of the staircase exiting the public parking garage. It is permanent and has been here for years. It is art that people often stop to read. It is publicly accessible to patients, visitors, and staff, and it welcomes them to the hospital. There is a separate staircase/elevator for emergency services, so this waypoint would not interfere with emergency services. Niantic wayfarer guidelines say that waypoints on private property can still make great waypoints if it is accessible to some community. This art is accessible to all guests and other visitors to the hospital’s community.

Appeal Text: Hello, this submission is a poem painted on the wall of the stairs of the parking garage for patients and visitors. It does not interfere with emergency services. I unfortunately spend a lot of time in this hospital and am responsible for most of the waypoints inside. Almost every submission, from the cafeteria picnic area to the statue in the front lobby to the playground outside, has been marked “obstructs emergency services” on a first submission. This is just false and is disheartening. There are separate entrances for emergency services and special elevators and other things for that. People stuck in hospitals can benefit from exercise and things to explore too. I hope you will reconsider this waypoint. Thank you for your time.

Niantic Note: Thanks for the appeal, Explorer! The nomination in question does not meet the Wayfarer criteria as it is poem inscribed on wall which is not unique. We recommend you review the Wayspot Criteria before submitting your next Wayspot contribution: Wayfarer — Niantic Technical Support and Help Center

Second submission that has not been appealed yet:
Title: Ik liep buiten, gedicht door Lisette de Groot

Description: This poem by Lisette de Groot from the collection ‘Waar ik weg waai’ is painted on the wall of the stairwell exiting the parking garage into the hospital. Full poem text: Ik liep buiten./Op de grond zag ik rood, bruin, geel, groen, oranje en een vieze kleur./Dit gebeurt niet vaak. Dit gebeurt maar 1 keer in het jaar.

Supporting information: This is a poem painted artistically on the wall of the staircase exiting the public parking garage. It is permanent and has been here for years. It is publicly accessible to patients, visitors, and staff, and it welcomes them to the hospital. This is a resubmission because the last one was rejected for “interfering with emergency services” and I want to add a clarification. There is a separate staircase and a dedicated elevator just for emergency services, so this waypoint would not interfere with any emergency services. This parking garage is for visitors and patients. Niantic wayfarer guidelines say that waypoints on private property can still make great waypoints if it is accessible and meets the other criteria. This art is accessible to all guests and other visitors to the hospital’s community.

Personally I think the rejection and the appeal decision were incorrect

I hope one of the staff can take a look and change the decision for you!

Ive also spent a lot of time at hospitals and its very important to have opportunities to take a break from whats going on with something fun or relaxing

Makr it direct to the point and.vivid

I really like these, and would love to stumble upon them while at a hospital.

Maybe because they’re in stairwells could be an issue, as if there is an emergency, such as a fire, the stairwells would be mainly used to get to the ground level, get out of the building safely. Yes, the likelihood of these happening is low, but it’s still there.

I think thatd be okay since if you were interacting with it during said emergency youd be leaving too.

You wouldn’t want to interact with any game during an emergency…

I’m just putting it out there as a possibility for rejection. While that’s not the rejection reason given by the appeals team, it’s could be.

No I mean if you were playing and the fire alarm went off, you wouldnt carry on, youd leave with eveyone else

I feel like theres probably quite a few places where its not super ideal to stand around playing these games but those can be waypoints too. I dont see this one as an issue safety wise

We shouldn’t stand out in the open during a thunderstorm, but this cannot be used to justify rejecting Wayspots that are in outdoor open spaces.

Any emergency can require people to go into or move out of affected or designated areas. None of this has any bearing on ‘blocking emergency services’.

An open field could be used as a landing pad for helicopters. Common sense would tell us to move out of the way and allow the copters to land, but would not suggest we should never nominate or play or exist in fields.

Did you even read that these are on hospital grounds?

Did you not read that they are in the parking garage?

Yes, but that doesn’t matter. It’s still on the grounds of a hospital.

Not necessarily an issue as long as it isnt in the way of the emergency dept, which it isn’t since there isnt a parking garage for emergencies, that would be an ambulance bay!

I recently had a Cafe at a hospital accepted on appeal. I do think this was an incorrect appeal decision for the poetry wall art.

I’m not arguing that this is a bad appeals decision; I’m trying to think of why it was rejected upon appeal. Just being poems with art on a wall is not a valid rejection reason; if that was the case, the sidewalk poems I’ve submitted would never have been accepted.

Yeah, I didnt think you were really against this waypoint idea since you said it was cool above

Suppose I was just trying to counter what you’d come up with as a possible reason - and if that was the reason then that is what the appeal should say!

I really hope this is revisited.
