I’m a bit confused, my poke spot nomination was rejected and I’m not sure why. It’s in a good place, there’s hardly anything else around.

It’s a QE2 postbox. Had this gone through to community review, it would have been rejected. The community only accepts postboxes prior to QE2 plus special ones (the first one for our current king, the ones coloured for olympic winners etc).
Niantic themselves don’t like postboxes as wayspots. The UK has a special thing about them, so the community almost universally accept the ones prior to QE2 under Exploration.

You’ve made me realise that topic is 2 years old (on this forum as it existed in the previous one) next month. 
Welcome to the madho… Sorry I mean community. E2R Postboxes by default are not eligible. Some do get approved when they shouldn’t. You probably are thinking…. Queen Elizabeth 2nd has passed away and should be eligible. Sadly this isn’t a criteria requirement on its own. QE2 post boxes make up the significant majority of postboxes that exist in the UK and therefore are considered as mass produced. Until such a time the number of QE2 postboxes gets reduced to a smaller amount, it should, in principle, remain reject material.

I do not have a stake or opinion on postbox type eligibility, however for your next non-postbox nominations, regardless of the object being nominated I would suggest making your nomination more prominent in the main photo - it should be the clear subject and extraneous items should be reduced to a minimum
