Question: Do Niantic-generated Wayspots (bus stops, crossroads) occupy S2 cells and block new submissions?

Hello everyone,

I have a technical question regarding S2 cells and the Wayspots that seem to have been automatically generated or imported by Niantic (for example, the generic crossroads, imported bus stops, or sponsored locations).

My questions are:

  • Do these auto-generated Wayspots “occupy” the Level 17 S2 cell? Meaning, do they count towards the cell limit for Pokémon GO, and do they trigger the 20-meter exclusion rule for Ingress, just like a normal user-submitted Wayspot?
  • What happens if I submit a new, high-quality Wayspot in the same cell? If my submission gets accepted, will it simply not sync to the games because the cell is already occupied by the generic Niantic Wayspot? Or is there a system in place where a high-quality user submission will overwrite or replace the generic one?

I have a few really good candidates that share cells with these generic imported spots, but I want to make sure I don’t waste my submissions or Upgrades if they have no chance of appearing in the games.

Thanks in advance for your help and clarifications!

This is the easy bit, as Ingress is no longer part of the same company as Wayfarer and Pokemon Go then No.

Ok but these pokestops were added recently. They don’t even have pictures.

Ingress is no longer relevant to any discussion about wayspots in Pokemon Go.

I am just trying to locate the Announcement.

Don’t want to state anything that is not true, that is why for the 1st reply I only answered that bit that I was 100% sure of.

I’d assume they do occupy a cell. Pretty sure sponsored ones do too - so if something was already in the cell you would get the sponsored stop too, but if the sponsored stop comes first then any accepted nominations after won’t go in.

It could be worth nominating in case they remove the trial stops.

As for the quality, that’s always going to be subjective, so it seems to be a first come first served type situation.

It could of course become a power spot though, so may still be worth nominating.

I haven’t tried it myself, but I think PoGo occupies the cell.

Ingress is no longer related to Wayfarer, but spots imported by Wayfarer shouldn’t interfere.

I would submit an eligible wayspot anyway. If they decide to end the experiment and remove those stops, the existing wayspot would go live then.
