Suggested Wayfarer Improvements

I have a few suggestions about the Wayfarer UI that could be changed.

Removing “illegal” tags from the selectable list. You dont need to remove the tag entirely, some spots might be grandfathered in. Since there hasn’t been a need to remove them in the past, it’s reasonable to assume noone will complain that those PoIs stay. But having those tags available is confusing to new members.

Clarification on things like SFPRPs (Single Family PRivate Property). What counts as a SFPRP, how do we check if a house is a SFPRP…

Clarification about Cells. It should be dead obvious why some spots don’t show up, that shouldnt require additional tools to be installed.

Option to submit Edit requests for PoIs - location, title, description, photos and removal, from the wayfarer website, not just the games.

I think a lot of new and existing members would benefit from these changes. Obviously this is far from a comprehensive list, feel free to comment more suggestions.

Hey @LuigiGamingLP,

there is already a clarification on SFPRP.

you can easily search what is considered SFPRP by internet websites that are different for every country, so this should not be a problem, and does not need more clarification IMO.

Cells are community observed, and never officially confirmed by Niantic so it is highly unlikely this will happen in the future.

That’s a good suggestion, but do know that the wayfarer map is only in it’s first version, there still might be changes coming which might include this.

The thing I think we need clarification on is neighbourhood signs.

I assume the tags in the selectable list are the list of categories? If so, it should simply be removed. Nothing exists /because/ of being tagged with a category.

Cells will never get clarified by Niantic.

You can already submit removal requests from the wayfarer map, although not other edits.

Location edits can be done through helpchat with evidence.

The new web submission route doesn’t have categories for which I am very grateful.

Submissions don’t have them, but approvals do. Which is just extra confusing.

I think that definition of SFPRP should be in a more obvious place than a forum post, or at least that the forum post should be linked to in a more obvious place.

Also, if a house in Europe is on a public walkway, and the wall of said house has a cool mural or whatever… If that house has one letterbox, that would be a SFPRP, yes, but also at the same time extremely confusing since the house right next to it may have a diffrent mural and two letterboxes, thus being fair game.

And reviewers need to be aware of this too, which is unlikely to be the case.

Also, i think there should be a better definition of “where to place a pin”. For example, if the wayspot is a park: Should the Wayspot be:

  • In the middle of the park?
  • At one of the entrances of the Park?
  • If at an entrance, inside or outside?
  • if at an entrance, any entrance or just the main entrance?
  • Anywhere in the Park?

And for spots that are very small, it should be defined what level of inaccuracy is acceptable - for example, a mural, grafitti or some signs on a hiking trail are impossible to pin down to the exact space they occupy, since hat area is less than 1cm² total (as we only have a 2D top-down map… That mural is a layer of paint.)

Not having a solid definition leads to people that want to move a PoI around for their benefit, people not undestanding why they got warned for placing a pin where they did etc.

Also… What counts as “accessible by foot” - Some PoIs are elevated.

Example:

Or something that is in the middle of a small road.

Things like that.

Also, it would be nice if the reviewer could send an optional message on “Why the PoI got rejected”.

Because i think that most full rejections are just someone submitting a 90% good PoI, the reviewer denying it cause he couldnt see the missing 10%, and the submitter guessing why it got denied and just resubmitting it unchanged.

Also, an option for the reviewer thats like “deny, if changes are made it can be resubmitted to the general Wayfarer community” and one thats like “deny, if changes are made it can be resubmitted to niantic staff”.

Cause there is a big diffrence between “someone did an oopsie” and “someone is abusing the system”.

Usually for larger areas it is recommended you choose something as an anchor – a sign, an entrance gate, etc

Things should be safely accessible by pedestrians – this usually means a sidewalk but in the countryside a shared road is usually ok since it’s not going to be very busy.

The rejection reason you choose while reviewing does end up being shown to the submitter. People have been asking to split the “permanent/distinct” rejection. If something is abusive, you can report it

https://wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/new/help/location-guidelines

  • Place the pin at the base of overhead objects

This is why I think anyone who submits an ai-generated photo should immediately get a lifetime ban. That is intentional abuse, not just an “oopsie”.

100% agree. That being said, thats likely an account they hacked or botted, so that lifetime ban is really just until they get the next account.

I also hope edits can be made from the web.
I also hope the restrictions on edits (number of times, distance) will be removed.
It would be great if the restrictions on removed reports were also removed.
If these become possible, some motivated Wayfinders will edit not only spots that go online via their own scanners, but also other pokestops, gyms, power spots, and wayspots.
This would allow Wayfarer import spots—most of which currently exist at inaccurate locations (some were converted to pokestops while retaining their incorrect positions)—to be edited to their correct locations and given more appropriate titles and descriptions.
Of course, reporting duplicate import spots for remove would also become possible without hesitation.
If this happens, it might even become feasible to hold Wayfarer Challenges, which are currently difficult to organize due to the lack of available items in the backend.

i think range limits are in place so accounts that clearly violate rules are easier to track and dont immediately have an international impact. That being said, i think that limit could be increased by a lot.

In relation to SFPRP, what is the guidelines for AirBNB properties? They obvious look like SFPRP but if they are rented for short stay, I would assume they are not. These are obviously a newer addition over the last number of years so I am curious as to there standing. A lot of the ones here are owned by corporations that may by up entire estates. I have come across a few with murals and poi attached but never submitted them as I’m not sure where they stand. My view on them is, if they are for commercial reasons they would not be classed as SFPRP as the whole building is rented.

In relation to submissions, some extra upload space for more supporting info (photos etc.) would be a welcome addition as it could speed up the process and avoid the back and forth with appeals staff.

My own take is that it depends entirely on the property, exactly the same as for other residences.

If it is a building that is a single residence rented out, I would treat that as SFPRP since it is occupied by a single family/grouping. There isn’t a strong separation between AirBnB and long-term rentals.

If it is a multi-apartment building, then it is not SFPRP.

Here there is, that’s why I’m curious. A lot of Airbnb here are short term rentals (1-7 day) So much so that legislation has been brought in trying to stop them as probably like a lot of countries we are buried in a housing shortage.

A lot of these properties are split or single room occupancy let’s, some would also be used as student accommodation so would have multiple different people staying in them so not a single family unit.

I’ve pretty much avoided them as I wasn’t sure where they stand, I would lean more on the not SFPRP due to the nature of them being short term let’s with multiple people using them and for commercial reasons, something along the lines of B&B’s.
